I find so much of goodness still; ' In men whom men pronounce divine, 1 I find so much of sin and blot? 1 hesitate to draw the line ] Between the two ?where God has not.'' j ? I THURSDAY. AUG. 7. 1913 1 ?????????????? 1 .Senator Tillman's "fried chicken shower," while a very interest- i ing bit of news, no doubt, is 1 getting rather monotonous by it- < eration and re-iteration in all its ' phases and variations. , Governor Blease, up to last Sunday, had granted tive hun- , dred paroles and two hundred and thirty pardons, a total of ( seventy hundred and thirty. That is "going some," even for Blease. Congressman Ragsdale has already set at naught very decidly the oft-repeated dictum that a new member of Congress can have no influence at Washington. On the important committee of Banking and Currency, he has made his influence felt in no uncertain way and the measures he advocates, if carried out, cannot hut be beneficial to the section he represents. Mr Ragsdale is a hard tighter and will never r?e content to play the role of "knot on a log" in the councils of State. The election in Florence county Tuesday on the question of voting a half million dollar liond issue for road improvement seems to have gone by default. No managers, it seems, were appointed and the election was held at less than half the voting precincts, we understand. Without the least desire or intention of "butting in" on a matter that does not concern us, we think the people would have "repented at leisure" had they saddled themselves with this enormous burden of debt and taxation. The News and Courier's Washington correspondent writes his paper that a rumor is current at the National Capital that Governor Blease will not enter the Senatorial race next summer, but, instead, will offer for a third term as Governor. Nothing that our * ? i-?__ esteemed uniei i\xecuu\e imgm eleet to do would startle a constituency long surfeited with thrills of his making, yet we can hardly see how His Excellency, after repeatedly announcing that he was in the fight for the Senate to win, can afford to get "cold A VARIETY OF NEWS i FROM SGRANTON.
