A Timely Admonition.
Editor County Record:?
Now that many people are preparing
to take their summer trips, I
want to put in a word of warning.
Let us remember in the pleasure and
AYritement of it all to be very care
ful not to break our Lord's command
to keep His day holy. I read in the
papers of so many people going on
excursions on God's holy day and
spending the time in worldly amusements, and
I am writing to everyone
concerned, but especially professing
Christians. Many of us take that
day, set aside for the worship of our
God, to start on a journey. Would
not Saturday or Monday do? How
can we deliberately break His law?
Christ says if we love Him we will
keep His commandments. And remember
that we influence others either
for good or evil. A member of
the church should consider under
whose banner he is marching on to
eternity, and whose name he bears.
Our Creator placed us here to work
for Him and to bear witness for
Him We are not butterflies flitting
about. but we are needed to help to I
extend His kingdom here on earth.
God is not only merciful, but He is
just. M C M.

BENSON BUDGET. I
I
Matters oi Current Interest Briefly
Told by Our Alert Scribe.
Benson, June 25:?The curing of;
the bottom leaves, or, in the lan-,
guage of tobacco folk, "sand-lugs", i
is the order of the day here. Some
farmers prime the tobacco, leaving
the first cropping on the ground to
decay.
Quite a heavy rain fell in this immediate
section Monday afternoon,
with some hail, but not enough of the
latter to do any considerable damage.
The Benson boys are becoming
much interested in baseball. They
have organized two nines, one bearing
the name the "Reds", the other
the "Blues". They have enough
boys perhaps to bring into play the
"Whites" and thereby complete the
popular color scheme. However,
the "Reds" and the "Blues" have
decided on a unique plan to keep up
their enthusiasm; that is,to play sev-1
eral consecutive games and at the
conclusion of the series, the team
making the least number of scores
will "setup" the opposing nine to an
old-time chicken pilau, a la Lawyer
McFadden, of tender memory.
Mr John Weeks, of Aiken county,
a graduate of class '13, who was
chosen to deliver the annual commencement
address at the closing
exercises of the South Carolina Military
College, was a visitor here last
week. He is a brother of Mrs Samuel
A McCullough.
Children's day was very appropriately
observed at Central Presbyterian
church Sunday morning with
' selected songs and recitals by the
young folk of the congregation. Mr
i H C Haddock was asked to speak in
the absence of their pastor. He delivered
a very interesting and instructive
address, taking for his
theme the Bible, the word of God.

Doubtless I shall be at some of

knows how to make the other
fellow pay the top prices on every
pile of tobacco. I am hoping to see
good prices prevail, and you may rest
assured that Morgan the Hustler
will do his part in getting you these
prices if you will give him the opportunity.
I greatly appreciate the
many favors that I received at your
hands last season in giving me a liberal
share share of your patronage,
I am coming to you this season better
prepared (if possible) to serve
you. So in order that you may receive
the most dollars for your many
drops of sweat and weary toil I
would advise you to try Morgan
with youi; first load and he will do
the rest.
Again thanking you for your
many favors and hoping that I may
invite more, I beg to remain,
Your Friend,

A bill of considerable interest to
the South, and South Carolina in particular,
has been introduced by Senator
Smith, of South Carolina,which
directs the Secretary of the Treasury
to deposit with the banks in the
cotton-growing States the amount of
money now held in the treasury accruing
from the sale of cotton seized
by the Federal Government after
the close of the Civil war, for the
purpose of financing the cotton crop.
Approved security and a low interest
rate will be required. Any part of
this money may be recalled when
cmuua axe ^xu^xij nu^uuivuvvu.
Nearly five millions are now held in
the treasury for seized cotton, about
one-half million being accredited to
South Carolina.

MAINTENANCE IMPORTANT.
Provision Should Be Made to Keep
Roads In Repair.
Hon. Logan Waller Page, director o 1
the United States othce of public roads,
believes that there is nothing more im
portaut than maintaining roads aftei
the.v are built. Commenting on this
phase of road work, he said recently:
Too much stress cannot be laid on
the importance of maintenance in con
nection with the work of improving
the roads. The people in nearly all the
states are filled with enthusiasm fot
road improvement and are spending
enormous sums of money In the construction
of superb roads, and yet almost
without exception they are mak
lng little provision to care for the roads
after they are built This is true not
i enly in the various counties, but undei
many of our state highway depart[
menu.
To maintain the roads in good con
| dition year after year requires a con
slderable annual outlay, but this outlay
is infinitely less than the loss which
must fall upon the people eventually il
they allow their roads to go to utter
ruin The thing for all advocates ot
good roads to do is to urge r-oiitinuoie
systematic maintenance and ihcsettfnc
Hside every year of an amount pet
mile estimated by the engineer ii
charge to be sufficient for the propel
maintenance ot the road -a eotirst
which must make for economy and efii
ciency.

GORREIL'S WAREHOUSE
Nov Ready to Receive Prtologs or
First Curings.
The big new warehouse on Hampton
avenue, .which had its first season
last year and became very popular
under the management of
Messrs Gass, Hopper & Gorrell, has
again opened its doors and offers its
spacious floors to the farmer for the
reception oi nis tooacco primings.
The regular daily sales of leaf tobacco
will not start for a week or so
yet. The date for opening of sales
will be determined at a meeting of J
the State tobacco warehousemen at
Florence next Saturday. But as
many farmers are probably anxious
to get their primings or first curings
out of the way, Gorrell's warehouse
will, from now on, be open to receive
same.
This popular house will be under
practically the same management
this year as last. Mr 0 C Currin.
one of the most famous tobacco
auctioneers of the Piedmont section,
will take the tilace of Mr Lee Hop
per, who served as auctioneer last
year. It will, as usual, be the chief
aim of every ma'n connected with
this house to see that its customers
get the very highest price for their
tobacco, and a square deal in every
particular. adv-lt__
