BY MR TOM MORGAN.
I
At a meeting of the Kingstree
Board of Trade held Wednesday evening
of last week, the president, Mr
H E Montgomery, was instructed to
issue a call for a mass meeting of
the citizens of the town to be held
at the court house Friday night.
The object of the proposed meeting
was only vaguely stated, but a full ,
understanding of the general work
to be taken up was evident by the
Kovmnninnc enthusiasm that charac
" terized every member present at
the meeting. After short talks by
several of the leading business men
the gathering adjourned.
The call for a mass meeting Fri- i
day night was heartily responded to, :
Jor with the call had gone forth the
announcement that Mr Tom M Mor- 1
gan, secretary of tbe Chamber of
Commerce of Florence, would be
^present to address the assemblage,
and at the same time invited the ladies
to "come out and help boost
Kingstree."
' The meeting Friday night was I

who introduced Mr Morgan
and stated that at the conclusion of 1
his address the meeting would re- ]
solve itself into a business session 1
for the consideration and discussion ]
of proposed plans for an advertising ]
campaign tending to the advance- i
ment of the commercial interests of 1
Kingstree on a larger scale. And i
it was along these lines that Mr
Morgan made a most interesting i
and highly entertaining address. He
^ prefaced his remarks by stating that

looked upon us Southerners as being
lazy. This was a mistake, and
he would vouch for the fact that we
had plenty of men in the South who
would stand around a corner store
and talk politics all day, then scour
the swamps all night for one little,
old, swiveled up coon as a reward
for his labor. "We are industrious
men," said the speaker.
What we need is a little more enthusiasm
and concentrated action.
We have a fine town, a splendid
location and are surrounded by a
territory as rich and fertile as any
in the South, where he could produce
on one acre as much as he
could on five in Indiana or Michigan,
or any other Northern or Western
State.
Mr Morgan's lecture was a timely
one, abounding in good, sound logic,
interspersed with some of the humorous,
yet [ridiculous facts tjnat
confront us almost every day if we

many of our business, and particularly
our farming methods.
When the speaker had concluded
his address, the meeting resolved itself
into a business session, with Mr
H E Montgomery presiding. Reports
from several committees, that
were appointed at Wednesday night's
meeting, were heard and considered
favorable. A soliciting committee
had raised about $500 on subscription
to be applied in advertising
Kingstree, setting forth her advantages
and possibilities as a market
place for tobacco and various other
products of the soil of the surrounding
country. Plans for the work!
were suggested and discussed at!

the part of every one present, to
devise ways and means that would
ultimately prove most beneficial to
the commercial complexion of Kingstree

A general programme was finally
outlined and the chair insVuote<l to
appoint a committee of five to decide
upon the work in detail and to
proceed at once to put their plans
into execution. Those appointed on
the committee are: Messrs W E Jenkinson,
chairman; Thos McCutcKen,
treasurer; W F Tolley, secretary, W
H Carr and A (J Hind9, l&q.
These gentlemen held a meeting
Monday morning and outlined their
work, which is already being executed.
It is hoped that they will have
the full co-operation of every business
man in Kingstree, and that
their efforts may be well rewarded
by a general business uplift for the
town and her citizens at large.

the stable before any of the
animals could be taken out. The
granary and buggy shed adjoined
the stable. Mr Keels, with his wife,
was in Charleston at the time of the
fire, which is thought to be the
work of an incendiary. Mr Keels'
loss will total $3,500, with no insurance.
