LUMBER CO. MAY NOT REBUILD.
Or at Least One Mill Will Replace
tbe Two Recently Burned.
All over this section of the eoun- I
try the fight is on in the case of the
timber contracts that are held by
the Atlantic Coast Lumber company,
and the situation in wnicn me company
finds itself placed is supposed
to be having a great deal to do with
the proposition for the rebuilding of
the burned plant at Georgetown.
It is understood that there are a
great many cases in Marion, Williamsburg
and other counties against the i
company based on the decision that i
they must cut the timber on the land
within a reasonable time or forfeit
the timber right- that they bought i
some years, ago.
One of these cases has gone to the '
supreme court on a ruling by Judge;
DeVore that set twelve years as a 1
reasonable time for them to start
cutting the timber. This has not yet <
been decided in that tribunal and its j]
decision will make a gieat deal cf 1
difference with the big lumber con- i
cern that is now holding the timber ! i
rights. j 1
A new case has been started up in
Williamsburg county that starts the j
fight from another angle, in the case ! ]
of one party who thought he had
waited long enough for the lumber ]
company to start work and who put '
a saw-mill on the land and bej?an to j i
cut the timber himself. The lumber i:
company asks Judge Shippfor an in- <
junction to stop him. The case was'1
argued yesterday, Mr P H Arrowsmith
of Lake City representing the
party who owned the land and who <
set up the saw-mill on it, and Mr A
C Hinds of Kingstree tne lumber
company. ? :
In the matter of the rebuilding of
the plant a meeting of the lumber
company was held Monday to decide1
what to do and adjourned without
anything being given out in the
matter. The president. Mr R J Clifford,
went to New York and was to (
have returned today to Georgetown,!
when the decision as to the rebuilding
will probably be made public.
It was understood in Georgetown
that the company would probably
put their plant back in one mill that
would have the capacity of the two
mills that were burned.
If the rulings of the courts are
against the company, however, it is
thought not likely that the company
. will immediately reinvest.?Florence

Will Clarendon Lose Territory?
The project of cutting off about
30 square miles of Clarendon's ter-!
ritory from the Workman section,
according to information given us
last Friday, has been renewed, and
that the petition has been forwarded
to the Governor for an election to go
into Williamsburg county. As we understand
it, the dissatisfaction arises
out of the school district management,
and after several attempts to
get the county board to satisfy a
portion of the patrons of the district,!
and failing to get the relief they de- j

off from the county and go into the!
adjoining county. It seems to us
they could arrange to form a school
district with much better results and
not disrupt the county formation.
However, they know the conditions
better than we do and are in a better
position to know what to do; we
dislike to have any portion of the
county disrupted, and especially are ]
we loath to part with the good people
of that section. If we could, we 1
should try to dissuade them from ;
their purpose, but if they are deter?

that it does not release them from
the bonded obligations of the county,
there is no helping it. We have
also information that there has been 1
a movement renewed to make Olanta 1
a county seat. It is contemplated ]
to take from Clarendon the entire 3
Salem section, making Black river '
the line,and taking a portion of Flor- !
v-ence county,and if this does not give i
the necessary area, then take the rest 1
from Williamsburg. It would be in- '
deed unfortunate to have to lose so J
much territory from this county and 1
we sincerely hope that it will not be 1
done. But there is no telling what 1
will be done when the effort is made
by those who have a pecuniary in- ,
terest in making the town of Olanta

off for a few days' trip. He will go
go to Augusta, Ga, and then come
hack to Aiken to attend the Grand
Lodge, K of P, meeting.
The dry weather has been broxen
bv light showers but not quite
enough to bring up the cotton.
Many acres are not yet up and are
not likely to come up until it rains.

church Sunday on account of
the commencement sermon at JohnBonville,
preached by l)r E 0 Watson
of Conway. His text was from
Matthew xxi,21-22. Dr Watson gave j
ns a grand sermon, containing many
inspiring thoughts that will long be
remembered by his hearers, both old
and young.

of meeting his old friend, Mr
W H Dickson,who resides in the city

from an attack of la grippe. Hope

Do not turn the work horses and
mules on grass on Sunday and keep
them on dry feed all the rest of the
week. The grass may do them a
positive injury. If Monday is hot
and the work is hard, the horse or
mule that had grass on Sunday will
not only be unable' to do as much
work, but will run a much greater
risk of suffering from colic and being
