BENSON BREVITIES.
Grateful Showers?Anent the Dispensary
Election.
Benson, May 20: -Monday afternoon
a most welcome rain came in
this section refreshing the thirsty
earth. A good many farmers had
to plant their cotton the second time
and of course were anxiously awaiting
this copious shower to germinate
the seed.
Last Sunday Rev J L Mullinix,
pastor of the Methodist church,spoke
to an unusually large attendance at
service. He read from the discipline
used by this denomination certain
sections that are particularly
applicable to the male body of this
membership, or in fact any citizen
who is eligible to vote. This section
referred to the dispensary law. There
is a petition being carried around
asking for another election looking
to the re-establish ment of a dispensary
in this county. Mr Mullinix
spoke in no uncertain terms of the
weak-kneed persons who lack the
^ moral courage to endeavor to nip
this first step in the bud.
We hear of a good many applicants
who expect to stand an examiJ

"Uncle Sam" has been very busiiness-like
in distributing daily reading
matter, letters and parcels to his
people in this section up to the present,
but we hope for still better service
with the introduction of the
rural delivery system. WES.
Postmater*s Reslanatlon Asked.
Washington, May 19:?The first
assistant Postmaster General has
called for the resignation of Mrs
Appelt as postmistress at Manning,
because the inspector's report shows
that she is not attending to the office
personally. This is carrying
out the policy recently announced
by the Postmaster General, that postmasters
must give their personal attention
to the business of their offices.
It is stated that the resignation
of Mrs Appelt will be accepted,
if tendered immediately.
Fnr snmp little time thp nnstnf
fice department has been conducting
quiet investigations all over the
country to see if postmasters are
paying the proper personal attention
to their work, and it is likely that
there will be a good many other
cases similar to that at Manning.

Valne of Good Roads.
Summarizing in a paragraph some
of the advantages of good roads, a
set of resolutions adopted by an Illinois
gooc roads association says:
"Improved roads mean better schools
and larger attendance, better health
and quicker transportation, better
farms and more cultivated land,better
crops and cheaper transportation,
better economii conditions and more
producers, bettc. social conditions
and less isolation, Detter cnurcn at
tendance and better citizens, better
postal service and closer friends,better
business and more consumers,
better industries and more employment,
a better State and better nation."
These are all things quite
worth while. Good roads cost money,
but the returns compensate for
the expenditure.
