COUNTY FAIR ORGANIZATION URGED. WOULD BENEFIT EVERY INDUSTRY-MASS MEETING SUGGESTED TO DISCUSS PROJECT. A few weeks ago some mention was made as to the organization of a county fair association,but it appears now that the subject has ceased to be ! agitated. Judging by the counties which have been conducting fairs tor tne last several years, since they have become the custom in South Carolina, we see that they are of material benefit to them, and this fact alone should encuurage us very much to organize one for Williamsburg. The ' county fair is an organization which ; benefits every industry in the county, for each enterprise feels an impetus as a result of the enthusiasm imparted by the fair. Heretofore it! has been erroneously believed that the fair could be of essential benefit to the farmer alone, but that idea is l-oniHiv nn<?in?r awav. and we are % r ?o ? now beginning to realize that the fair may aid every industry and every enterprise. However, whatever is of benefit to the agriculturist is certainly also an aid to all besides, for agriculture is the base of all else. A county fair would have a tend ency to promote better ideas and methods of farming and would also spread far and wide the best ideas already extant with reference to agriculture. The prizes offered by the association would stimulate the farmers to do their best,and the volume of production in the county would be augmented by their renewed effort. Especially would the fair bring about a complete revolution in the choice and selection of Kocf caorls nnH nlnnts_ Verv few tUV VWV OVVUW MMV> f.?? ? - ? of us know even how to breed seed corn successfully; that is, the detasseling process.and yet it is very simple and may be readily learned by one demonstration, or even by being properly instructed in a lecturefX a fair. These things count for much and should be encouraged in every way possible. Fairs also tend to introduce in the county new crops. The trucking industry is assuming rather large proportions at present, as is also the tobacco in Just ry, but there is much room for more such crops. The lands in certain sections in the county appear to be well adapted to the growth of asparagus, judging by lands in those communities where this im portant money truck crop is raised, and it would probably become a very profitable industry if it were introduced in the county. The writer is familiar with its culture and he would like to get some one to plant a small area and thus give this trucking crop a beginning here. The shipping facilities are of the very best, as we are in a few hours' time of the great markets of the North. It appears that the most successful county fair associations, or any other association of like character, are those entered into by the largest percentage possible of the citizenship of the area involved. If we were to nrorsmVp an assoniation-and the writ er trusts that we may do so this yearit would be profitable to make the shares of stock in the association very small, so that even the boys and the girls on the farm might take at least one share. This would cement the organization together better than anything else, and the writer suggests that the shares be made five dollars each, with the privilege of taking as many as 100 shares in one name. Our soil, climate, crops, people and all natural facilities conspire to place us in an excellent attitude with reference to this important matter and the organization will prove essentially beneficial to all who participate in it, we trust. What Women Can Do. Women, after all, are the chief molders of civilization. It is the man's place to supply its material hasis. but its finest flowering is the oroduct of women's activities. Rural civilization has lagged largely because farm women of all classes have had least opportunity for united effort, least organization and co-operation?and alas! too often least education. Saddest of all is the fact that the educated woman in the country,finding conditions in the community unattractive, has too often run away from them to town instead of setting out to improve them, has run awiy from her God-given opportunity for service. Now, of course, one woman cannot, single-handed, remale a community, but there are thousands Hi/Mieon^B r\f npicrhhnrhoods(Der anu wuvuouiiuu v* ,r haps the very one in which you live, kind reader) in which one earnest, consecrated, tactful woman could rally her sisters to her and with their aid literally revolutionize community life. For one thing, be sure the woman's club would help get larger and better schools, for if there is anything a mother is interested in,v it is the education of her children. Then too, the club would doubtless work out the idea of having the school become a social center?a place for neighborhood gatherings, lectures, debates (a debating club is a great help to any neighborhood),entertain, ments, special meetings to discuss -dans for neighborhood betterment, Leal shows for exhibits of farm crops, Woman's work, the boys' corn exhibits, the girls' canning work, etc. You may be sure, too, that the women would work for better roads and rural telephones and county fairs and a better public health service and school libraries and reading rooms and a score of other needed improvements that your community may go without for another generation, if we depend on men alone to do the job. Men and women were meant to do team work?side by side, pulling together.
