After dinner we fired a salute in ^

Forty-nine years ago this month
were fought the battles of the Wilderness
and Spottsylvania Court
House, from about the first to the
10th, fighting every day. One day a
terrible battle was raging during a
heavy rain and thunder storm. The
dashing lightning and roaring thunder
seemed to be taking a hand in
the struggle,while the rattling mustetry,
booming cannon, the huzzas
>f the charging Yankees and the
viid rebel yell made the carnage awful
and indescribable, while "man's
nhumanity to man made countless
;housands mourn," but myself and
;he few whom I have mentioned, as
veil as many others, went there to
itay with our shoulders to the wheel
;hrough heat, dust and smoke of

Lieutenant Theodore Nelson,
Sam Cockfield, the bravest of the
brave. I remember quite well when
our regiment had orders to go to
Virginia. I got leave of absence to
come by home; I wanted to tell my
friends good-bye. I had some idea
what war was. I was going with the
boys among whom I was raised,come
back or no come back. Many were
sorry to part with Mrs Mary McEl
veen, mother of Mr ueo Mc&iveen.
She shed tears for me and said,
"Poor Conrad is going, too." She
gave me a small Bible, which I carried
throughout the four years. After
telling them good-bye I came to #
Kingstree to take the train for Richmond.
Eli Fleming, poor fellow,who
gave his life for the cause that was
lost, met me at the depot at Kingstree.
He had his banjo and was a
good musician. Many others were
to go on the same train. Numerous
mothers, wives and sweethearts were
sobbing with arms around the loved
ones,but not "Poor Conrad". While
Fleming was picking the parting
tune I was shuffling over the platform,
singing, "Julia Ann Johnson,
don't you cry, I am going away to
Ioottq u/iii " Tf?? mnrlnrtor said.
"All aboard." I rushed around and
told one or two weeping women
?ood-bye. I did not see their faces,
rhey said, "God bless you," but
while so many were shaking hands
