since many moons. The Democratic
party's tariff doctrine is on
trial and if it be a failure, the
sooner the country at large finds
it out the better for us all. But
we do not believe that tariff revision

Grace, mayor of the city of Charleston,
does not attempt to raise some
kind of disturbance. Mayor Grace's
Latest exhibition in his particular

line is an effort to hold up the seating
of Hop Richard S Whaley,
Congressman-elect from the First
district. Mayor Grace fought
against Whaley's election to the i
very last ditch, and when his efforts
failed of accomplishment, he whines
like a sulky child, alleging that 1
Whaley "didn't play fair" in the
nolitical came. If the honorable

Mayor of Charleston would refresh
his memory a bit he miglit recall
that some pretty ugly things were
said anent his political methods
during and after the strenuous campaign
that landed him in the ,
Mayor's office. With all confidence
we predict that Congressman Whaley
will take his seat, to which he is
declared elected by the State Democratic
Executive committee, with
out any serious inconvenience or
embarrassment, Mayor Grace to the
contrary notwithstanding.

Cades, May 6:?The late cold and :
weather has so retarded beans
that the present prospect is for only
about 25 per cent of a full crop, although
some estimate 33$ per cent. ,
The sad news has reached us of j
the death of Dr S C Moore, a victim
of the negro outlaw in Hampton
county. The remains will be interred (
at the family burying ground near
Moore's X Roads today.

last week.
Mr H J Brown is home, after an (
extended trip out West. He reports 1
having had a good time.
Mr McGee of Scranton has
opened a blacksmith shop at the old
stand vacated by Mr W A Parker. <

a pine grove Thursday of last week. ]

groes Monday: Sing Smith of Abbeville
county, convicted in 1913 of as- c
sault and battery with intent to kill t

ry Johnson, convicted of manslaughter
at Dillon in 1911, and sentenced p
to 15 years imprisonment.

The test case under the Webb law
passed by Congress foi bidding the j
shipping of whiskey into "dry"States j
came up before the State supreme
court Tuesday morning. The attor-1
neys were permitted to submit their | '
cases and the Attorney General was 8
given until next Monday to file his is
brief, so the matter will go over un- j1
til Monday.

D J Crowley, one of Georgetown's *
most successful business men and a'1
progressive and public spirited citi-1"
zen, died Saturday morning after an;
operation for appendicitis. "Dan"
Crowley, as he was known to those j
most intimately associated with him, I
was a loyal son of Grin, possessing
most of the virtues and few of the
failings of the typical Irishman.

One pardon, for the purpose of restoring
citizenship,and eight paroles
were granted Saturday by Governor
Blease. The pardon was issued to
J J Higginbotham, white, of Aiken
county, who was convicted of steal- i
ing a bale of cotton, February,1910,
and sentenced to eighteen months
imprisonment. Among the eight paroles
was one to Marcus McCullough,
colored, convicted at the November,
1905,term of court in Chester county,
for assault with intent to ravish
and sentenced to ten years in the
State penitentiary.
