P H A. Lines from Leo. Leo, April 29:?It has been a long time since I have given the many readers of The Record the items from Leo. I will endeavor to make up for lost time. It is not any use to say much about the cold weather for every body knows that. It is not worth while to mention the measles for almost everybody around Leo has had it and those who have not are expecting it at any time. The farmers are busy transplanting and replanting tobacco. Hon J Davis Carter planted over a week ago and reports a good stand. All who had early plants are through setting them out, but those who planted their seed late are still setting out their plants. I never like to tell anything that is old, but you must allow me to say something about our Prospect lodge K of P. It has begun to put on new life and in future we are going to try to make it one of the best lodges in the county of Florence. 1 moc?r? r a Rrown and Walter j Poston, delegates from Prospect ' lodge K of P, attended the district convention which was held at Kings- 1 tree April 22 and reported a fine time. We have recently found oat that a corps of Seaboard surveyors have i surveyed a line from Pamplico City through this section towards Hemingway. CO* We L TWO WHITEMENKILLED BY DESPERATE NEGRO. RESULT OF PrrCHED BATTLE IN SWAMP BETWEEN NEGRO AND POSSE. Hampton, April 30:?Two prominent white men were killed and several wounded in a pitched battle this afternoon and tonight with Richard Henry Austin, a negro, accused of attempting to criminally assault a white woman at Luray, this county, today. The dead are: J Frank Bowers, a Hampton county planter,and Magistrate F H Edenfield of Allendale, Barnwell county. The wounded include Dr S C Moore, George Hanna, McTeer Bowers and an unidentified white man. Dr Moore, Hanna and the unknown man are probably fa tally injured. Austin is alleged to have gone to the home of a well known citizen of Luray and attempted an assault upon a young woman, about 4 o'clock this afternoon. Cries of his intended victim are said to have attracted passersby. The negro escaped and sought refuge in a thick woods. He was armed with a shotgun, a bag filled with shells, a large revolver and a belt filled with cartridges. An attempt to follow was made by the white men and the negro opened fire. In the first exchange of shots J Frank Bowers was killed, Dr Moore probably fatally wounded and George Hanna was shot in the back. The pursuers retreated a short distance and kept up a scattered fire at the negro. Help was summoned , from Allendale and Hampton and bloodhounds were ordered. About 8 o'clock tonight Magistrate F H Edenfield of Allendale, who had joined tne posse, attempted to lead a dash into the swamp. He was shot . and instantly killed and an unidentified man with him was probably fatally wounded. A cordon was drawn around the section of the swamp where the negro was at bay and reinforcements were awaited. Shortly after 9o'clock S the negro made a dash for .liberty. Fully fifty shots were exchanged but he broke through the line, escaping. Bloodhounds are being rushed to the scene from Barnwell and from the State penitentiary.
