many friends in Kingstree.
The Kinpstree Telephone Co has;
recently purchased several thousand j
feet of lead cable, into which the |
transmission wires will be assembled
in sections of the town, where they
are mostly conpested. This will do
away with a lot of annoyance so of-1
ten caused phone owners by crossed
wires.
'Students of the Kinpstree Hiph j
school contemplate issuinp a class j
annual before the close of the present
session. They have already secured
several papes of advertisinp
matter and it is believed that the
class will meet with every encourapement
at the hands of the business
men of of Kinpstree.
The bank statements published
this week indicate a flourishing financial
condition throughout our
county. The total deposits foot up
a considerable sum and all these institutions
seem to be prospering.
When we look back less than twenty
years we wonder how we got along
without a bank in the county.
Young ladies of the Kingstree
High school will serve cold drinks
and ice cream Friday at the athletic
field. This is being done to assist
in raising funds for the publication
of a class annual. Don't be a "tight
wad" when you go out to see their
sports. Carry a little small change
with you and spend it with them.
Hon B B Chandler, chairman of
the board of trustees of Union High
school, spent several days at Winthrop
recently contracting with
teachers from the senior class to
teach at Rome next year. The fol-!

During a rush of traffic over the A
C L railroad the company made
Kingstree an all-night office. This
has been discontinued, hence the departure
of the above-named gentlemen.
On Tuesday morning, April 22,
Miss Jane Allen of Florence will be
united in marriage to John DeS GiU
land, Esq, of Kingstree. The brideto-be
is the youngest daughter of
the late Mr James Allen and a sister
of our townsman, Mr M L Allen,
while the groom is a popular young
member of the Kingstree bar. Owing
to the recent death of the bride's
father, the marriage will be a very
quiet home affair; only immediate
relatives of the contracting parties
will be in attendance. Immediately
after the ceremony the young couple
will leave for Florida.
Chas W and Philip H Stoll, Esqs,
and little Phillip, Jr. returned to
Kingstree last night on Train 89, after
having been absent since Friday
of last week, when they left town in
their automobile for Chester, which
point they expected reach that-afternoon.
After leaving Bishopville they
found the roads in such a bad condition
that, after much delay, the
automobile had to be abandoned and
the journey continued by train. They
report having had a good time, notwithstanding
the detentive features
of the trip. They had expected to
return here Monday afternoon.
Orators Selected.
Friday night last at 8:30 o'clock in
the school auditorium a preliminary
oratorical contest among pupils of
the Kingstree High school was held
for the purpose of choosing contestants
to represent this school at the
Williamsburg County Oratorical and
athletic association meeting which
is to be held here tomorrow.
Those entering the preliminary
contest were: Misses Ruby Thorn,'
Olivp Mnntiromerv. Elizabeth Speig
ner and Jennie Lee Epps; Messrs Edward
Hurt, Alex Blakeley, Zeno
Montgomery, Casper Holroyd, Earle
Cook, McBride McFaddin and Wm
Gamble. Musical selections were
rendered by Misses Claudia Jones
and Louise Barr.
Considering the inclemency of the
weather a very good audience greeted
the young speakers who deported
themselves in a highly commendary
manner.

Field Day Friday.
For the past few weeks the high
school has been preparing for the
annual oratorical and athletic meet '
to be held here tomorrow. Eight or
ten schools of the county will participate
and an enjoyable day is promised
to all. In the afternoon at 3
o'clock will be the athletic feature
cf the day: 100-yard dash, 220-yard
dash,220-yard hurdle, 440-yard dash,
880-yard run, mile relay race, high
and broad jumps and shot. The
teams in the county are all strong
and an exciting race for the tropny
cup, now on exhibition at Messrs
Watts & Watts', is expected.
In the evening at 8:30 will come
our reading and oratorical contest.
Our speakers for the evening are
Miss Ruby Thorn and Mr Zeno Montgomery.
Let all Kingstcee show
their appreciation by coming out to
these events.
