So Rules Judye Shipp As to
"Blind Tijer" Purchasers.
Anderson,February 19:?In South
Carolina the buver of whiskey from
a blind tiger is guilty of a violation
of the law and is punishable just as(
is the seller, according to a decree
handed down today by Circuit Judge
Shipp in dismissing several appeals
from the Recorder's court of this
city.
The defendants, convicted in the
Recorder's court of the charge of
transporting contraband liquors, appealed
on the ground that they
were acting as agents for purchasers
and that the whiskey was not contraband
because it was to be used for
a lawful purpose. The defendants
stated that they secured the whiskey
from a blind tiger, naming the
man, and they merely carried the
whiskey from the tiger to the pur
cuasci.
Judge Shipp stated that the defendants
knew the whiskey was contraband
when it was in the hands of
the blind tiger and that its character
did not change when it passed
into the hands of the defendants, al-j
though it may have been obtained
by them for a lawful purpose.
The cases will probably be carried
to the State supreme court. Should
that tribunal affirm Judge Shipp's
order in dismissing the appeals and
affirming the judgments of the Recorder's
court, the blind tiger business
in South Carolina will be dealt
a staggering blow.

CLARENDON MOB LYNCHES BOY. I
Prisoner Taken from ConstableUsual
Verdict at Inquest.
Manning, February 2.1:?A negro
boy narne'd Marion Cantri, aged 17
years, was shot to death by a mob of
12 or 15 masked men at Tindall's
Mills, six miles west of .Manning,
about 1 or 2 o'clock this morning.
The boy had been arrested for assault
and battery on a young white
man named Joe Mims and was sent
up for trial by the magistrate at
Paxville. The magistrate's constable,it
is stated, started to Manning
to lodge the prisoner in jail, but after
traveling about four miles he
was overtaken by an armed mob,
which took the prisoner and 9hot
him.
Coroner Gray held an inquest to1

Poaching on 'Possum Preserves.
The Columbia State warns us that
Editor Wolfe, of the Kingstree Record,is
poaching on our 'possum preserves.
It's kind of The State, and
it's mean, lowdown in Editor Wolfe.
We want it distinctly understood
that poaching or trespassing: upon
the preserves of the Loris 'possum is
strictly forbidden. We have worked
hard to establish this industry in the
South and have succeeded in producing
a 'possum that has no equal.
Its fame has gone abroad, and now
that the British Parliament and the
German Reichstag have passed laws
exempting it from duty, we expect
to do a land office business in the
foreign markets. Orders are already
booked from the King and Emperor,
and we have assurance that the Ahkoond
of Swat, who had a taste of j
the Loris delicacy on board an Asiatic
steamer, will include it in his
private bill oi iare.
So, fair warning to Editor Wolfe
and all other wolves who would encroach
upon our private preserves!
The law is strict and we will use it
with a heavy hand upon anyone who
disregards this notice.
Besides, we have set man-traps at1
every cross and intersection road
and 16-pound rapid-fire guns are
planted every 200 yards along the
line.
So, beware!?Lor in Metes.

Year 1912.
The following is a summary of
farm demonstration work in Williamsburg
county during last year.
All of these farmers received in
structiuns from the Agricultural department
at Washington, but in
many instances these instructions
were not followed very closely. Nevertheless
the results are interesting,
and I beg that you publish them.

Anelent Legends.
From the dim and shadowy past
there have been handed down to us
some charming legends, and though
we know that they are not altogether
true, vet we love to think and
speak of them. We have always
been under the impression that the
sycamore tree is a safeguard from
lightning and the legend tells us the
reason. As the virgin mother of
Christ was on her way to visit her
cousin,Elizabeth,the mother of John
the Baptist, a thunder shower came
up as she was traveling along the
road, which led through the hilly ,
country of Judea.and to shelter her- (
self from the rain she stood under a
sycamore tree which happened to be
near by.
Another sad and sweet legend is
that when our blessed saviour was
being whipped and scourged by His
enemies, one of His persecutors
stripped some branches from a willow
tree which was growing near by
and used them in scourging our
Lord and Saviour. As the legend
goes, that tree has been holding down
its head ever since in shame and
sorrow that it should have been used
for such a purpose, and that is the
reason it is called the "weeping willow."
Still another legend says that
while our Saviour was hanging on
the cross a robin,as it was flying by,
saw His sufferings and in pity tried (
to take out one of the thorns which
was piercing His forehead, as it did
en n Hrnn nf that sar*rpd hlond fell
on its breast, and from that time the
robin's breast has been red.
'On the cross the dying Saviour
Heavenward lifts His eyelids calm,
Feels, but scarcely heeds the trembling
On His pierced and bleeding head.
Stained with blood and never tiring.
With its beak it doth not cease,
From the cross 'twould free the Saviour.
Its Creator's Son release;
And the Saviour speaks in midness,
'Blest be thou of all the good,
Bear as token of this moment
Marks of blood and holy rood.' "
I would like, before closing, for
you to consider with me the death
and burial of Moses. What an honor
to be buried by angels! Moses led
the children of Israel up to the land
God had promised them, but he
could go no farther?he was allowed
to view this land, but not. to enter.
"By Nebo's lonely mountain,
On this side Jordan's wave,
In a vale in the land of Moab,
mere nes a loneiy grave.
And no man knows that sepulchre,
And no man saw it e'er;
For the angels of God upturned the
sod
And laid the dead man there.
And had he not high honor?
The hillside for a pall.
And God's own hand in that lonely
land
To lav him in the grave?"
