Ernest McLaurin Joye, who has been called the champion corn grower of South Carolina,was in Mulllins for a couple of hours Thursday while awaiting connections with the noon train for his home in Williamsburg county. He arrived on the morning train eomintr here from Columbia. The young man was accompanied by his father, L L Joye, a prosperous planter of the Hemingway section of Williamsburg county. While stopping in Mullins the young corn king was met by a number of the citizens of the town who took an interest in him and heard bic remarks nn how he Droduced the splendid yield which has won for him the honors of being the State's champion corn grower. He spoke also of his visit to Washington which had been awarded him for his record. The young man had been to the National Corn Exposition for several days, apd while there he was awarded the State prize of 875 for his 1 yield, which was the highest average reported in the Boys' Corn clubs. He made 207 bushels on one acre at a cost of 40c per bushel. I Young Joye spoke in a cheerful manner of his methods employed in planting and raising or nis crop anu answered all questions asked him in * regard to the process established in making of his crop. Among other things he said: "I broke deep and harrowed well three times before planting. I had 14,000 stalks in the acre. I replanted so as to get the corn all started off together. After the corn was up and about four weeks old I backed up four furrows deep with a Dixie turn plow, leaving corn on about eight inches space. This I did to keep the corn from feeding, even to the soil in the middle, also preventing it havimr too much stalk to support. About May 20, I began putting down guano and manure, going one side at a time and throwing ont every other middle. June 1, I hauled ten two-horse wagon loads of stable manure. Later, I applied 800 pounds nitrate of soda, putting two applications of 400 pounds each in at a time. "Only one stalk of the 14,000 was barren. This point I overcame by selecting seed in the field from the most prolific stalks and transplanting, getting all the corn together and holding the plant down so as to have less stalk to support and to give the Dlant the help it needs most in earing time.
