The Robin's Food.
Once upon a time some one got
the notion that the common Ameri
can robin is a foe to the orchardist
and berry-grower. The alleged disI
covery was promptly published broadcast
and the fruit-grower loaded his
shotgun and went forth to slay the
robin.
Since the robin redbreast is the
commonest of our song-birds, extremely
sociable in his habits and unsuspecting
in his disposition, he naturally
fell an easy victim. The fruitgrower
felt himself perfectly justified,
for did not the bird destroy the
early cherries, pick the young apples
from the trees and help himself to
> any number of quarts of berries?
He had been caught in the act again
and again.
The fruit-growers' investigation
into the food habits of the robin
| went no further than observing that
he sometimes ate cherries. It never
occurred to the man with the shoteun
to examine the contents of his
victim's stomach. If he had done so
1 with a mind open to conviction, a
surprise would have met him. The
robin does eat early fruit, but the
quantity is small in proportion to the
number of insects he destroys.
His diet consists chiefly of moths,
butterflies, caterpillars, earthworms,
cutworms and other creatures that
the farmer can very well spare. The
small fruit that the bird consumes
! is only his dessert after meat.
| If the robin plucks small apples
from your trees, would it not be well
to examine the apple before killing
' the bird? He may be doing you a
great favor.? Youth's Companion.

The Coming Year.
The worst or best I would not know,
And yet, strange inconsistency,
I ever ask, "What will it be?
A year of joy, or woe, to me?
A year of plenty or of dearth,
Or shall it be my last on earth?"
The kindly curtain of God's grace
Hides all the future from my face.
