HOW TO SPEND MY DAYS In the Year 1913 Better than 1 Did in the Year 1912. Any student in any sehool of Williamsburg county who will write the best essay on the "Best way of spending each day of this year 1918," will be presented with a $5 gold piece, and the second best $2.50. The judges will be composed of five dis - * ? i-il I-.. 1 interested parties neaaeu uy me county Superintendent of Education. All essays must be in The County Record office March 1 and must be strictly original. We are in receipt of letters from a number of children contesting for these prizes, but it is impossible to publish them all in one issue. They will all be published, however, in the order received. So if your letter does not follow don't feel discouraged, it will appear later. First, if the day is fair get up looking happy and bright; do all the good you can; do your home duties well and willingly. If you are attending school, go and don't see how much you can worry your teachers; see how good you can be and how perfect your lessons can be. If it is a gloomy or rainy day do not be discouraged if you expect to spend the day with one of your playmates, but be bright and try to make others happy, and you will be happy yourself. During the week if there is a prayer meeting at the church don't say: "I don't think anyone will be there; anyway, I'm not going." But go and try to get others to go. On Sun days go to church and listen attentively to what the minister is saying and see if you can't get some benefit from the sermon. Next, let us consider education. Education is all in a person's life. Just think, our glorious State, South Carolina, which is known far and wide for its hospitality and refinement, is second in ignorance, North Carolina being first. Parents, in September when school begins, try to send all of your children that are old enough. If anew building is needed and if sufficieiii sums of money are not given, give ei~ tertainments to raise it. The peopie each day should try to make their m.Uaa1 U/i !rt Qaiif DUll/Ul UUC Ul tllC 1COUU15 IU Iwrvubii Carolina. Try to make the best of each day as it come to us, for when it is gono and we wish for it, we can but wish in vain, for it has gone not to return. As the poet has wisely said: "The New Year some day, When he's old and gray, Will ask us what we have done With the precious gifts of the year gone by, As they come to us one by one. "May we tell him then with an answer * true. When he puts us to test, That with every gift he has brought us We have tried to do our best?' Ft i pv Hpmivc.wav Rome, S C. I get up in the morning and dress, then go and brush my teeth, then before breakfast I go for a little walk and get some fresh air, when I come back I eat my breakfast, when I get through I go over my lessons once or twice to be sure that I know them well, when I get through I go to school. I do not like to miss my lessons and be idle, but brightandgay. On Sundays I go to church and listen at the preacher preach. When I go home I read Sunday-school papers. Then in the evening I go to Sunday-school, when I come back 1 take a little walk then go to bed: When I wake up in the morning I go to school again and I like to know my lessons. I love school life, I think there is nothing better than it. I am a girl of Kingstree graded school and these are my ways of spending the good days of 1913. Lucilk Hurt. I jump up in the morning and open the door for the cook and give her out the meals. Then I go upstairs and brush my teeth and dress. After that I run and jump outdoors to get some fresh air. I look over my lessons two or three times to see if they are right. Then breakfast is ready. I eat, then go to school as soon as the bell rings. I do not like to give the teacher anytrouble or get any demerits, for she won't like me if I give her any trouble. I do everything my mother tells me to do. On Sunday I go to church and listen to the preacher, but some children laugh and talk at church; that is not good at all. < i When my mother doesn't go I ccme ; and tell her what the preacher said, i In the morning I go to the Baptist Sunday-school,then to the Methodist | church. In the evening I study my j i Sunday-school lesson and then go to ( the Methodist church. I like to an-j 1 swer all the questions. Then on Mon- , day I have all my lessons prepared for school. When I come from | school I help my mother with a lot of things. When the cook wants a I. J 1 holiday I help to cook and wash the: ] dishes for her. I prepare my lessons j' in the evening, for at night I get! i sleepy and then go to sleep. I like \ j school very much. I try to make my i grade every year. I like to get on ; the honor roll every month. I like :: mv teacher verv much. I am a little 11 | ' Kingstree girl in the fourth grade. , Madge Blakeley. , ( |l I am planning to spend the days; i of 1913 in the very best way that I!, . can during the school period of the 1 year. I intend to rise early and i make preparations for the work of j' each day. I shall dress myself neatlv for school and after helping about the house as much as I can, I shall j. go to school and behave well all dav.: 1111 I intend to have my lessons well j prepared, recite the very best I possibly can and obey my teacher in all; things. When I return home I shall j' again help about the house and yard until supper. After supper I shall , study my lessons for the next day. i During the vacation months I shall help my mother with her work 1 ( in the garden and the flowers. I j j expect to have some pleasure in go-' ing to picnics and other public gath-!! erings, because at these places I can j, meet with my friends and have a 1 . .. ..... i i good time with them. |, I shall not forget my Sunday-;! school. I intend to have them well J prepared, so that I can answer cor- 1 rectly every question that my teach-' er may ask. This work should be: considered by all boys and girls as one of their most important duties, as it teaches them to be good, true and useful. I shall make it a rule cf life to be kind and gentle to my playmates and friends, so that all of them may think well of me; but most of all, because it is right for me to treat them well. Whatever I do for them will be done gladly. I expect to do each day's work ' just as it comes to me. I do not intend tn nut nff fnr tn-mnrrnw what can be done to-day. First of all, I . mean to learn the great lesson that to-morrow never comes and that all , the time we can count ours is today. Then I shall spend the days of < 1913 in being useful, good, consid- \ erate and cheerful. I hope that it will be the happiest year that I have j yet lived. Lizzie Gordon, i Fifth grade, Kingstree High school. ] I have made up mv mind to try , and be more helpful both to myself i and others in 1913 than 1 have been in the past. I have made some new rules that I am going to try and | follow. ! I am going to obey my parents better than I have in the past. ? I am going to study harder and ! try and recite better better lessons. I am going to be more patient and kind to my brothers and sisters ' and also to my playmates; to be more agreeable and cheerful and try and bring more happiness to others if I can. I will try to attend church and ' Sunday-school as often as I can and remember what the preacher says. . I will not waste any time at play until I have learned my lessons and done any work at home that I am told to do. ( T am orninor tr? ronot mnnv crr>r?H ' * Uiii 6V/Uift vv * books as I can.
