GREELYVILLE GLEANINGS.
Events of Local Interest abont
Town Briefly Chronicled.
Greelyviile, January 13:?Election
of city officers on the 21st inst.
Miss Ruby Hogan of Blythewood
is attending the high school here.
Mr J E Rankin is having his home
at the corner of Society street and
Varner avenue remodeled and hopes
to be in it soon. '
Mr and Mrs R H Footman spent a j
few days in Charleston this week. I
The second number of the lyceum
course was given here last Friday
evening, the entertainer being ionCorwine,
and was thoroughly enjoyed
by all present.
Mrs Lulie Tucker and children ot
Richmond, Va, are spending some
time here with relatives.
Mr and Mrs S C Boyle of Elloree
spent several days here with relatives
last week.
Mr E C Spann of Lynchburg was
noted on our streets last week.
Several cases of smallpox are reported
near town, and our citizens
are being|vaccinated.
The pupils of the graded and high
school seem to be quite busy with
their mid-term examinations.
Several new autos are seen about
town; the most recent purchasers
arefcthe Mallard Lumber company
and Mr C E Harris.
Mr B M Oliver of Oswego was in
town a few days last week.
Mr AjL McElveen, who is attending
the University of South Carolina,
was at home a few days this

Benson Brevities.
Benson, January 13:?Our farmers
are preparing for the tobacco
season by burning the beds before
planting the seed. The making of
the "weed" is becoming one of the
essential parts of farm culture in
this section,where the quality raised
is second to none in the county.
This is a conclusive fact, as shown
by sales made last summer by
some of the tobacco planters near
here,bringing them fancy prices for
large quantities of tobacco.
Services were held in both the
Baptist and Presbyterian churches
last Sunday. Rev W E Hurt, of the
Baptist church, spoke in no uncertain
terms of the evil of dancing
and card playing. Both of these
evils or innocent pleasures, as the
case may be,are indulged in by some
folk of the community, and perhaps
j?
the remarks gave ioon io a iew lor
more serious thought. The Presbyterian
pastor's theme was: "Does it
pay to serve God?" His discourse
wes edifying and held the marked
attention of the congregation
throughout its entirety.
The numerous friends of Mr Fred
P Guerry are delighted to know that
he is able to sit up. after having
been confined to his bed for mere
than one month, having beefi extremely
ill at times during this period.
TheJast few weeks of his convalescence
he has been under the
attentive, care of Miss Ethel Mc
Lean, a trained nurse of Kingstree,
who no doubt aided materially in
the young man's recovery.

CASUALTIES AT SCRANTON.
TP. S. Wall Paralyzed?J, L. Jor- :
i dan Badly Hart by Falling Tree. I
Soranton, January 14:?Scranton: ]
was shocked this morning to learn! 2
! that Mr P S Wall had had a stroke *
of paralysis while in the store of Mr '
Winslow Wright. He fell and was
found to be perfectly helpless, being '
carried to his home near by. Doc- ;
tors were called and found his entire .
left side paralyzed. They have very J
little hope of more than partial re- :
covery.
On last Friday, while clearing
some new land, Mr J L Jordon, who *
lives two miles from this place, was
caught by a falling tree and his ]
hip and lower limbs were so badly 1
crushed that there is very little hope
of his recovery. He will probably
never be able to walk again. i
Mrs Fannie Arm an, who was car- ried
to Riverside infirmary, Charles- i
ton, last Monday for an operation for '
appendicitis, is reported to be rapid- '
ly improving and hopes to be at
home in one more week.
