The ladies of the Episcopal church
held a silver tea on Friday afternoon
last at the residence of Mrs R J Kirk, j
Besides being a most enjoyable social
affair, a neat little sum was realized
for the church.
The Atlantic Coast Line's magnificent
tourists' train, the "New York
and Florida Special", made the ini- j
tial run of the season Tuesday morn-1
ing, leaving Florence at 4:50 and
passing here about 5:20 a. m.
Mr V E Strong of Cades was noted
on our streets Monday. "Vernon"
has met with a very^ heavy loss by
the recent fire at Cades, but his
friends here hope that he will soon
be doing business at the old stand.
Stephen Thomas & Co, the enterprising
Charleston jewelers, have
secured the agency for the State
seal rings. Samples of these rings
may be seen at The Record office
and orders left with us will 'be
promptly filled.
Miss Lanle and Mr Jno Bell left
Tuesday for Mount Holly, where
their father, Mr J C Bell, recently
located and will reside in the future.
Miss Katherine Bell left yesterday
to join the other members of the
family at their new home.
A delightful dance was given at
Salters on Friday night of last week
by the young men of that place.
Among those who attended from

the negro struck here Tuesday of
last week bv a passing freight train,
is, we understand, getting along all
right at the A C L railroad hospital
at Rocky Mount, N C, where he was 1

well arid favorably known in Kingstree
and bis- rapid recovery is hoped
for.

from the factory and the installation

A G Carmichael of Hemingway
was in town Sunday with his brother,
E A Carmichael. Mr Carmichael recently
moved to Hemingway from
Centenary and is well pleased with
his aHonted home. He stated that 1
the section in which he has moved is ]

bids fair to become an industrious
trucking section when season for
planting is on for another year.?

is not an uncommon sight to see a
horse or mule team over-loaded, or
the poor beast so poor or bruised up
as to be scarcely able to travel, and
the cruel master never seems to notice
it, but, on the contrary, lays on
the lssh. There is a law to prevent
crueky to animals and it should be
enforced.
Two New Churches Projected.
We are reliably informed that the
erection of two new churches will be
commenced in Kingstree early in the
coming spring.
Some time since the Presbyterian
congregation decided to build a new
church at a minimum cost of $12,000
and immediate efforts were put
forth to raise that amount by subscription.
These efforts have been
crowned with success, inasmuch as
a sufficient sum has been sub- |

which it is expected, will be ready I
for use by its growing congregation
within the present year.
TheB ptist congregation of Kings- ]
tree and vicinity have long felt the
need of a new house of worship and
only recently renewed efforts were j

inaugurated tending to the erection
of a $10,000 church. The efforts of
the pastor and others closely identified
with the work of raising sufficient
funds, have, as, in the case of

the Fresbyteria is, met vvnn marw;u
encouragement. It was the intention
of the building committee at
the outset to raise $8,000 of the
maximum sum before the work of
construction should begin. This
amount has been practically subscribed,
and it is more than likely that
within the year we shall see a handsome
new church replacing the little
frame building on the corner of
Academy and Brooks streets/now
used as a meeting house by the Baptist
congregation of Kingstree and
vicinity.

schools and colleges have left for
their respective schools to resume
studies.

The graded and high schools resumed
work last Monday, after
a vacation of about three weeks.
The annual meeting o4 the stockholders
of Bank of Lake City was
held on last Monday. After the
meeting, dinner #as served to about
thirty-five stoCk-Holders and guests
at the Halcyon hotel.
There will be a' meeting of the
Junior Order of American Mechanics
tonight, in an effort to complete
the organization that was started
some time ago. There is a great
deal of interest being manifested in
