Ernest M Joye, of Williamsburg
county, is the champion boy corn
grower for South Carolina this year,
working under the rules of the State
corn contest, which was conducted
by the State department of agriculture.
He produced 207 bushels of
corn on one acre, which is the largest
yield made in the State since Jerry
Moore broke the world's record
by producing 228 bushels and three
pecks on one acre in 1910. All the
winners in the State contest will very
probably enter their exhibits at the
National Corn exposition to be held
here during January and February.
The following prize winners were
announced yesterday by Commissioner

FIRE AT CADES.
Postofflce and Several Stores
and Contents Destroyed.

Cades, December 24:?A fire occurred
here last Thursday night at
1:30 o'clock, destroying the postoffice
and Byrd's store,on the corner
of Main and Railroad streets, also
the vacant store belonging to C C

the rear. The fire swept across from
Byrd's store and destroyed Mr V E
Strong's store. Mr Byrd's family,
whose residence was attached to the
store house, and Mr Will Flagler,
who lived upstairs, lost everything.
Owing to the late hour of the
night there was very little help in
time to do any good, and had the
wind been blowing the whole town
would have been destroyed. As it
was, the fire was stopped with the
above result. Both Mr Byrd and
Mr Strong sustained a heavy loss, al/
though each had some insurance.
The pouch containing The County
'Record, left in the office unopened,
was burned up, along with other
matter arriving in the late mails.
The new mercantile company and
bank here have done a good business
since they opened up,and their neat,
attractive appearance adds a new
impetus to the old town.
The old stand-bys are all doing
their share of business and Cades is
still on the map. We hope erelong
to see new buildings going up where
the fire has made a black hole in
our main business street.

Misses McLees and Barrett, the
Cades public school teachers, have
gone to their respective homes for
Xmas.
The entertainment given at the
3chool-house last Thursday night for
the benefit of the school was well
patronized and a goodly sum realized.
