PEE DEE FAIR ASSOCIATION
ORGANIZED.
WILL BE UNDER THE AUSPICES
OF THE FLORENCE CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE.
The meeting in the interest of organizing
an agricultural fair for the
Pee Dee section took definite form
at the Chamber of Commerce last
night when the committee appointed
at a recent meeting to devise a plan !

the following resolution:
"Resolved, that this committee of

in Florence recommerd that
^the whole matter be turned over to

; the effort in charge and make such j
% arrangements as it deems best to
raise the amount of $50,000 for the
establishing of said fair association."
The committee took the position
|t tbat the Chamber of Commerce had

hold of the effort and push it, and
for this reason should have charge

K After some discussion the resolusr
tion was adoDted and accepted by
| the chamber. Following this a comI
mittee of three was appointed to
v make arrangements for the begin^
ning of the active work. This committee
was empowered to formulate
such plans as it deemed necessary to
carry the work along successfully.
The plan suggested comprehends
raising a sum of $50,000 and the location
of the fair in Florence, since
this city is the central point of the
great Pee Dee section. Work in the
matter of stock solicitation will begin
in the next few days, and Florence
county will be thoroughly canvassed
before going into the other
counties of this section in the interest
of this splendid effort for giving
impetus to agricultural development.

burg, yet takes a warm interest in
everything pertaining to the welfare
and upbuilding of our county. He
wants our county to join the Pee
Dee Fair association in order to
show this section of the State what
can be done in Williamsburg.
Indiantown Items.
Indiantown. December 4:?The hot
supper at the Indiantown school house
on the night of November 22 was a
success financially as well as socially,
something over one hundred dollars
being raised, which was applied to
the artesian well.
Mr and Mrs Tom McCutchen of
Kingstree spent Thanksgiving here
and enjoyed the hospitality of their
brother, Mr D E McCutchen.
Mr and Mrs Philip Arrowsmith of
Lake City passed through Indiantown
Sunday going down to spend
the day at Rome.
Dr C S Patrick, Jr. and Dr William
Klatte of Charleston spent the
Thanksgiving holidays with Mr R H
Ervin, coming up Wednesday* morning
and returning to the city on
Saturday.

the schedule that is to become effective

Woods Near University Campus.

D Watson, whose corpse was discovered
about 9 o'clock this morning in
a patch of woods, two miles from
Greenville, following his mysterious
disappearance from his room in one
of the Furman university dormitories
yesterday morning, tells the
tragic story of a student whose mental
poise was toppled over from
brooding over what he had conceived
to be a rebellion against the voice
of God calling him to the mihlstry
in earlier life. In a fit of despondency
Mr Watson had wandered off
to the spot, where he had often
studied Greek with a classmate, and
drank of a deadly potion.

Friday and the greater part of Friday
night, one of the, university
students came upon the prostrate
form cf the young man in a patch of
woods on the Augusta road. The
alarm was sent in to the university
and immediately the college bell was
set tolling, carrying the sad intelligence
to searching parties throughout
the surrounding country that
the body of the missing man had
been feund. ,
The Coroner was notified of the
finding of the body and, after making
an investigation, ordered the
corpse removed to an undertaking
establishment, where it was prepared
for shipment to the young
man's home in Horry county.
A brief service was held in the
chapel this afternoon by President
Edwin M Poteat, of the university,
after which the body was borne to
the railway station followed by the
students of the university and the
fitting school in marching order.
Wlntbrop College Notes*
Winthrop College, Rock Hill, December
2:? We have an organization
at Winthrop known as the
"Correspondence Club". The members
of this club, one from each
county, are appointed by Dr Johnson.
It is the duty of each girl to
write from time to time to her
county paper for the purpose of
keeping the people interested in
what is happening at Winthrop.
Ai the student body has increased
so much in the last two years, it has
become necessary to enlarge the infirmary
and auditorium. This work
has been commenced and is rapidly
going forward.
It will be of interest to the people
of South Carolina to know that the
English grammar writcen by Dr Jas '
Kinard, head of the department of
English, and Miss Withers, an instructor
in the training school, is
being used as a textbook in Shanghi,
China.
On next Wednesday, "Knapp's
Agricultural day" will be observed
by most of the schools and colleges
in the State. We have arranged an ;
interesting programme, Mr L A Ni- j
ven being the orator of the day. Mr 1
Niven was formerly agricultural
teacher here and we will be delighted
to have him speak to us on that
day.
Misses Ada Brockington and Mary
Gordon are wearing smiles "which

salads and sweets were served. * t
On last Monday morning about
one o'clock, fire was discovered in i :ij
the rear of J D King & Co's tobacco
sales warehouse. The flames had
made great headway when discovered
and in a very few. minutes the
adjacent prizeries, the property of
Mr J D King, were also consumed
by the flames. The origin of the
fire is unknown. There were about
forty thousand pounds of tobacco totally
lost in the fire, while the warehouse
and prizeries had some insurance.
This is the second fire within
the last month originating in and
destroying two of the largest ware
houses in Lake City, and occurring
at the same h6ur and on the same
day 01 tne wees, mis is very singular,and
it is hoped that if this was
done in a spirit of malice or revenge,
the guilty parties will be
apprehended and severely punished.

Mr. Fairy Go?sto Walterboro.
Rev William Arthur Fairy, who
for the past four years has been
pastor of the Kingstree Methodist
church, was appointed by the Annual
Conference of the Methodist
Episcopal church, South, on Monday .

is very satisfactory to Mr
Fairy .since,according to the rules of
his church,he could remain in Kingstree
no longer, although his congregation
and host of friends here give
him up reluctantly.
During his pastorate here Mr
Fairy and his good wife have endeared
themselves to the people of
the community regardless of sect or
creed, and their prayers and best
wishes will follow them into their
new field of labor.
As pastor of the Methodist church
here Mr Fairy has been an able and

with a handsome new

Mr Fairy and his family will leave
Kingstree about Thursday of next
week for their new home.
Rev D A Phillips, who comes to
Kingstree in Mr Fairy's stead, is a
man of charming personality and an
able and earnest worker. He has
served some important charges in
the South Carolina Conference,
among them Manning and Winnsboro,
and comes to Kingstree from
Richburg, in Chester county. He .
will not remove his family here till
after Christmas.

in the court house at Kingstree. All
