New York, November 19:?Three
hundred thousand dollars' worth of
California fruit,one hundred and fifty
carloads in all, will be allow**! to
decay on the North river piers where
it was landed this week unless ncme
settlement is reached shortly in a
dispute between the' New York I^uit
Buyers' association and the brokers
representing the California shippers.
The disagreement is over a recent
increase by the brokers in the cartage
charges assessed against those
who purchase the fruit at the pier
auction sales. As soon as the increase
was announced the Buyers' association
declared that it would boycott
all shipments until satisfactory adiustment
was effected. A shortage
of California fruit throughout the
East will be the probable result.
The 150 carloads, mostly oranges,
grapes and pears, were to have been
sold at auction yesterday. When the
oranges were put on the block not
an offer was received. The fruit was
valued at about $4 a box. "Will
anyone give me five cents a box for
these oranges?" asked the auc tioneer.
Not a bid was received, though
nearly 400 buyers were prerient.
"Will anyone give me one cent a
box?" asked the auctioneer. Still
the fruit went begging and trie sale
was adjourned.
Illinois milk producers found they
had to organize to get living prices
for their product. This is needed
in all lines of farming.
The most profiting way of marketing
grain and fodder is through
stock. They produce manure,which
is very recessary to the soil.
Charleston's Splendid Harbor.
The bringing safely into port of
battleships of 21,825 tons displacement
and drawing 29 feet of water
is proof sufficient of the superiority
of the port over any other on the
South Atlantic seaboard. The fact

of the A tlantic fleet, representing
the best )f the United States navy,
take up hut a very small space on
the water front, leaving room enough
in the broad harbor for hundreds of
other ships, is an object lesson pointing
out that nature has placed at
Charleston's disposal facilities for
handling commerce in such volume
as would easily place her in the list
of pre-eminent cities of the world.
The feature that plays an important
part in considering the entrance
of vessels of such draft as the Utah
and Florida is that at this season of
the year the tides are the very low
est. Capt W S Benson, or tne uian,
stated to members of the reception
committee yesterday afternoon that
there was a depth of 34 feet when
the Utah passed into port. This is
sufficient to bring in the largest manof-war
afloat without the slightest
fear of trouble. But even the powerful
Arkansas and Wyoming, the
super-dreadnaughts, each of 26,000
tons, do not represent the limit in
big ship building. Within a few j
weeks the New York and Texas, each

year the Nevada and Oklahoma, of
27,5000 tons each, will be launched.
These will then be the largest menof-war
afloat; but even they could be
brought into port by the pilots.?

Is your husband cross? An irritable,
fault finding disposition is often
due to a disordered stomach. A
man with good digestion is nearly
always good natured. A great many
have been permanently cured of
stomach trouble by taking Chamberlain's
Tablets. For sale by all dealers.
