V TVT'M' 1 Would join wliiiamsDurg. i It has recently come to us that the ' voters of Midway township are seri- j ously considering the proposition to i rote themselves into Williamsburg' county. We sincerely hope they; will not do this, as Clarendon has no territory to spare, and l>ecause:1 the people of that section will gain , | nothing by the change. One of the | reasons assigned is that the roads! ' are better cared for in Williams- < burg, and that the distance to the court house at Kingstree is shorter. The first reason can be remedied by seeing to it that Clarendon county's * officials look after the roads in the ( Midway section and improve them; the second reason a^o distance to the court house should l>e consider- i ed from the standpoint of whether , it will pay the bond tax in addition to the taxes levied in Williamsburg, and, too, there is no telling when Williamsburg will catch the pro- < gressive idea and build a new court < house to keep up with the pace set by Clarendon and other counties; * should Williamsburg built a new j eourt house there will l>e a bond issue, and our friends will be paving ^ for both the Clarendon and Williamsburg l)onds. The best thing to do is to stand by Clarendon and help , us get the roads like they ought to be. We do not want to lose the ( good people of Midway.?Manning j Times. The arguments set forth aftirma- j tively are good enough to induce our friends in Midway township to ( annex themselves to Williamsburg. ( On behalf of Kingstree and Williamsburg county, we offer these good people a cordial welcome, i feeling that it would be of mutual * interest for them to come within * our borders and assuring them t that their lines could not be cast ( in more pleasant places. j As to the negative argument, ^ that is easily disposed of. The j Clarendon county courthouse bonds j are a mere hug-a-l>oo and the Wil- < lianishurg courthouse bonds never had birth save for political purposes. Our grand old temple of ' justice has served the county for 5 half a century or more and what ' with the improvements made in the past decade, we are well con- 2 tent with it until our growing 1 ' * . ? 1 population demands anotner more commodious building. Even then, ^ it will l>e for the people to de- * eide on by popular vote. So don't let those Himsy arguments stand 1 in your way, friends, if you want ( to join with us in building up J old Williamsburg. J -j. ? Record Corn Yields, s The result of the boys' corn con- ' test for this county which was offi- i * i \m , sially announced November 9,show J p eel the highest yield from an acre to t be 207 10-5(> bushels, produced by v ^ t ?.t. o earnest auye; me nc.\i mgncst ?uo o 140 bushels, produced by Sam (1 p Moore. f So far as we have seen, these are 1 the highest yields to the acre that r have been recorded for the year 191*2 I in the State of South Carolina, and 1 unless we are mistaken Ernest t Joye, of Williamsburg county, should be awarded the prize as the ^ champion corn grower for the pres- 1 ent year. Be it remembered that v his yield of *207 bushels on one acre ^ falls only twenty-one bushels short 1 ? of that of Jeremiah Moore, of Florence, who now holds the world's record for the number of bushels 1 crrnwn hv n hnv on one acre of land. . J " II We may l>e claiming too much t for Ernest Jove, hut until a claim- c ant appears with a letter right and title, we hold that our young friend is entitled to the State champion- j ship for 1912. i We l>elieve, moreover, that Sam ^ \ G Moore, whose acre produced 140 s bushels, stands second or third in 1 highest yield in the State for this * year, and the average numl>er of bushels grown by the first ten or | twelve contestants, if not the whole twenty, would equal or exceed the | average attained by any boys' corn club in the ?State, comprising an equal number of contestants, for the present year. The two young men referred to should by all means enter their names in the State contest, not inly for their own sakes, but for the sake of Williamsburg county, ivhose lands are as productive as ire any in South Carolina. The next House of Represent-a :ives on present returns is: Demo rats, 252; Republicans, 88; Progressives, 6. Districts in doubt and * inreported, 89. The Democrats vill get most of them. W J Bryan is said to l)e stat" id for Wilson's Secretary* of ?tate. It would >?e interesting to enow how many of the present Juliciary would retain their places if he people had to pass upon their lualifications. President-elect Wilson has defilitely concluded that immediately ifter his inauguration he will call m extra session of Congress for the purpose of revising the tariff in )rder to give relief to the masses from excessive taxation and extortionate prices for the necessaries of ife. This is as it should be. Now it is up to the Democrats to make a spoon or 3poil a horn. In the midst of the era of good 4 feeling brought al>out between the sections by the nation-wide support jf Woodrow Wilson, a Southern rWuY>?nra4 t)n> rpm.nrt nooroditpd to ?----senator Tillman 111 an interview I jiven the Augusta Chronicle comes | .villi execrable taste, to put it mildy. "I want to shake my list under :heir (the Yankees') noses and say, Boys, we've got you now where ve've been wanting to get you for iighteen years, and we are going to jive you li?! " Doesn't such language sound magnanimous and statesmanlike? If it were Tillman >peaking for himself it would make mall difference what he said, but vhen he erupts'such bilious vitu- , (.ration as voicing the^sentiment of j' he Democrats of South Carolina, re think lie not only does his con- j tituents a gross injustice, but! daces our State in a bad light lie- j . I are the whole country. Such ebulitions can do no possible good and nay work incalculable harm to the democratic party. Surely Senator Tillman know? that the South can-: lot afford to draw sectional lines.
