The world'.* series l?etween the j
champions of the two big leagues is j
attracting more attention just now j
than the Presidential election. j
The second primary election for
State officers conies off Tuesday,1
j
October 15. The only race tol?e:
run over is lietween Messrs Lyon
and Peoples for Attorney General.
Lyon had a lead of eighteen thousand
votes in the first primary, but
it is hard to tell how the second
* race will come out.
With an abnormally low percentage
as compared with last year, or
the past ten years' average crop,
the price of cotton goes lower instead
of higher. We do not believe!

thing like what it should lie. It
certainly is hard on the inmr, hardworking
farmers who have to sacri- 1
Hce their hard earned crop to meet
obligations that cannot he delayed. ,

that such extravant claims hurt j
rather than help the Denioeratie j
candidate. However good his in- j

his exuberance and allow the "Klephant"

ernor Bloa-e's Imdy-guard and al- j

Democratic party ami lined up with !
the Hull M.k.sc herd. It i- not un- J
reasonable to as-uine that Mr Beard ;
voted in the recent primary election I
ami therefore took the usual oath to 1
<upport the nominees of the party ;
in the general election,hut he certainly
cannot he expected to serve two ;
masters. I?y the way, if we mistake
not,it was this same Beard who some
months ago broke into the limelight
by offering to fight a duel with
Thomas B Kelder on behalf of (Jov-j
ernor Blgise. The incident wa> eon-'
i
siderably discussed at the time, but
the only fighting done by Mr Beard
was through the columns of the
newspapers, we U-iieve.
Lest We Forget.
Editor County Record: ?
Due to the fact that this is the
"busy season" and that the gathering
of the harvest is at present the
thought of greatest concern.it needs
that we be reminded "lest we for- *
<
get." But busy as we may be. and <
as important as are the demands of <
the season upon us,we cannot afford <
to underestimate or overlook the <
<
recent articles published in your pa- <
per appealing to the educational in- ;
terests of Williamsburg county. ;
The movement proposes a mass *
meeting for Saturday, October 19, ;
at the school auditorium in Kings- <
tree. Its purpose is for a general <
discussion of conditions which touch <
and influence the fundamentals of <
<
our intellectual uplift and'progress. <
It is not a trustees' meeting, yet the *
trustee who fails to attend this rally,, <
unless he be unavoidably hindered, <
should reflect on the matter and de- <
i <1
cide for himself whether or not his <
lack of educational interest disqual- i
ifies him for the position which he ; <
holds. The influence cf his presence ^
is what will make the meeting a ^
success,his absence will tend towards t
its failure. ^
It is not a teachers' meeting, yet j
the teacher who loves her or his ^
work and who is earnestly trying to ^
inspire pupils under her or his care ^
and desires to fill the profession B
with the success which it deserves (
cannot afford to be absent when the
meeting is called to order, unless
providentially prevented. However, ;
if it were possible for every teacher
and every trustee to, be present,
without a splendid sprinkling a patrons,
the meeting would even then
probably be a failure. So, then,;
let's not forget. Let the teachers
and the trustees and the fathers j
and mothers of school children heed j
the call of Miss Florence Stubbs and !
assemble on Saturday, the 19th, to j
near her message and the message
)f others?and to tell their own i
thoughts and ideas should they like, j
Thi6 movement is not merely local.
It is State-wide, and other counties
are responding. If Williamsburg,
1
:hooses, she mav lead in this work
ind in this way add new laurels to :
ler present enviable educational rec)rd.
The spirit of rural improvement
is taking, hold of the public
ind business men of Williamsburg
md with a united effort our citizenship
can be placed above that of any
:ounty in the State, but there is but
>ne avenue which leads to this upift.
'Tis the avenue which leads
ilso to the country school house.
Time seems ripe for advancement. Z
3ur forces are practically in line. \
DUt they are only "marking time," ?
iwaiting the command, forward, i
narch! So citizens, don't forget, :
jut come together on the 19th and '
'ollr matters ever one to the othpr I
until some plan may be devised which
vill unite us all under one banner I
vith but one motive and a single
purpose?Altruism.
