NEAR LYNCHING AT | jWAGENER, AIKEN CO.; SHOOTING,OF. ONE ^PROMINENT ; CITIZEN BY ANOTHER CAUSES f- j REIGN OF TERROR. Aiken. September 30:?Almost a roicm nf torrnr rules the little town of Wagener, in Aiken county, caused by the shooting and fatally wounding of Pickens Gunter, president of the bank of Wagener, by Hugh C Long, editor of the Wagener-Edisto News, mayor of Wagener and recently nominated as Representative in the General Assembly from Aiken county. The affray between the two men is the culmination of bitter feeling growing out of political differences. Two candidates for the Legislature, H C Long and J C H Busbee, both citizens of Wagener, entered the race for the House of Representatives. Political lines were closely drawn and acrimonious personalities freely bandied back and forth,so that feeling ran high on both sides. Long's election in the second primary fanned the flames of hatred against him so that his life was threatened should he return to Wagener after the election. A third primary for the House of Representatives elected Busbee, Long's opponent, to the General Assembly also and Long returned to Wagener, thinking that the trouble had blown over. Long's story of the shooting is very brief. He was standing near the business square of the town Saturday afternoon reading a newspaper when Pickens Gunter approached him in a hostile manner and knocked him down almost before he realized what was happening. His assailant was on top of him when I^oncr drew his pistol, a 38 calibre revolver, and commenced shooting. The first shot missed Gunter, but the second took effect in his stomach, the bullet penetrating the intestines many times and finally lodging in the bladder. After the shooting Long took refuge in a neighbor's house and barricaded himself therein against the mob that rapidly formed, thirsting for his blood. Sheriff Raborn was wired of the trouble and urged to come with a posse at once. The Sheriff promptly responded, and finding the town in possession of the mob, members of which openly avowed their intention of shooting Long to pieces should he show himself, he quickly wired Governor Blease asking that a company of militia be r ushed to Wagener. Later on the Sheriff eluded the vigilance of the mob and got his prisoner through the lines and on to Aiken, where he is now safely lodged in jail. When he found he had no use for the soldiers.the Sheriff countermanded his request. With seven physicians and two trained nurses attending him, there is said to be no hope whatever of Mr Pickens Gunter's life being saved, his dissolution being but a matter of hours. Dr O B Porter and Mr Hayes Gunter, relatives of the wounded man, have been arrested and lodged in jail as accessories to the affair. Grcelyvllle Items. Greelyville, October 1:?Mr T J Hogan spent Sunday at Charleston. Dr W L Taylor, Mrs Taylor and Leland, Jr, were welcome visitors here Sunday. Dr J F Haselden, who has been a resident ot this place for the past | nine years, has returned to his old home at Juhnsonville, where he intends going into the livery business. We hope for him great success. The two ginneries of this place are kept busy when the weather permits. Dr R F Zeigler has been on the j sick list several days. Messrs Henry McClary and Willie Rhodus spent Saturday at the county seat. Dr Morse,a veterinary surgeon of Sumter, was in town one day last , week. The Mallard Lumber company seems to be quite busy,as they have to run their planers at night to keep up with the orders. If the Society street people think so much of their street why don't they clay it? Shave Head, i t Legal Notices ; .... i Summons for Relief.
