Fowl Cholera.
Many people are wont to jump at
conclusions and call everything cholera
that seems to trouble their chickens.
This is especially true if there
is any sign of bowel trouble. While
many of the ailments have no semblance
of cholera it is perhaps a
good thing to get poultry that keep
uneasy and are ready to investigate;
with such a state of affairs something
is very likely to be done to
better their condition.
Very often during hot weather
' you will find a number of your hens
stalking about the yard in a slow,
listless manner, stopping to straighten
their feathers and Deck at them
selves. You can just put it down
in your note book that they are l?eing .
overrun with mites which are simply
sucking their very life blood
from them, which will cause them
to have bowel trouble, and if these
pests are not removed it will not
take very many days to see the
death of many good hens. These
hot days breed lice by the million
when allowed to get a start. After
a few hens have died with such a
trouble of the bowels, caused by
lice or mites, others may become affected
by contagion and real cholera
is brought forth. In real cholera
the fowl assumes a very tired or
listless gait, similar to the one when
lice is the trouble, but the discharge
from the bowels is of a watery nature,
green and bright yellow in
color. The comb soon turns black
or very aarK purple; at times tnere
is a foamy discharge from the
mouth, but not always. When this
is present it indicates cold in connection
with the bowel trouble.
When these decided symptoms of
cholera are present a prompt separation
should ensue, putting those
showing a decided case promptly
under the sod, making a place for
all showing slight symptoms, to get
them away from the well ones.
In the drinking water for the well
ones and the slightly indisposed ones,
add one-fourth of an ounce of sulphocarbonate
of zinc to each gallon
of water. Cleaning the premises is
a most important item at such a
time. The runs and houses should
be thoroughly cleaned, scraped and
swept and the drappings covered
with soil. After this is done a thorough
spinkling should be done with
water, into which has been stirred
one pint of sulphuric acid to 20 gallons
of water.
The stamping out of the disease
depends largely upon the tnorougnness
of the cleaning. Cholera is a
dreadful disease, but with prompt
and vigorous methods of the right
kind it is easy stamped out. The
advice for those who do not have it
is to do the cleaning job, anyway,
and thus avoid its appearance at all.
Postoffices To Close Sundays.
Washington, August 26:?What
seemed t > be an innocent and inoffensive
a lendment to the postoffice
appropr,acion bill, when adopted,
which was put in by J R Mann, minority
leader, has caused a general
protest from all parts of the country.
The amendment provides
that all first and second class postoffices
and also of smaller towns, shall
be closed from 12 o'clock midnight
e\ery Saturday until midnight Sunday.
The provision is so drastic in
its nature tnat not even patrons of
the postoffice who have lock boxes,
will be allowed to get their mail.
At the office of the third assistant
postmaster general this evening it
was stated that the provision means
that newspapers sent out on Sunday
morning will remain in the office until
Monday. No exception is made
in any class of mail except that
; bearing a special delivery stamp.
The postoffice appropriation is al
ready law, the president having af
j fixed his signature to the measure,
and the postoffice officials have al1
ready mailed thousands of letters
' directing that the postoffices be closed
every week from midnight Saturday
until the same hour Sunday
night. Perhaps the greatest loser
by the enactment of the bill will be
the publishers and readers of newspapers.
