^ Against Farmer's Wife.
Greenville, July 1:?Charged with
having attempted to ravish the wife
of a farmer of Pickens countv. and
with shooting her twice in the back
with a single barreled shotgun,as she
xan through the field to hex husband
Brooks Gordon, a young negro, was
taken from the custody of the Sheriff
by a determined mob late Saturday
afternoon and lynched.
According to reports from Easley
^ Gordon attacked the woman as she
was at work in the field at 10 o'clock
Saturday. She broke loose from
him and ran through the fields toward
her husbund, who was about
a half mile away.
The negro carried a single barrelled
shotgun and demanded to know
of the woman if she intended to reN

Big Crowd Attended Campalgi
Meeting Saturday.
Andrews.July 1:?Your scribe at
] tended the campaign meeting of th<
j State candidates at Georgetowr
! Saturday, June 29. The candidate:
for Railroad Commissioner spok<
first, each presenting his claims foi
the office, especially old Mr Canslei
of Tirzah. If it's to be given to th<
I longest winded man Mr Cansler wil
1 win this time. He has been in th<
race since Wade Hampton's time.
TVio oan/^iHotoc fr>r Attnrnev Gen
eral spoke next?Lyon, Earl, Evani
and Peeples. Mr B B Evans accusec
the State of great graft in the old
dispensary. He said her officers hac
stolen hundreds of thousands o1
dollars.lt seems that to put an hon
est man's hands on dispensary monej
starts him to stealing at ence. A1
four candidates for Attorney Gen
eral made strong pleas for the office
The next candidates in order wen
McLaurin and Carter for State
Treasurer. Mr Carter is a bright ane
ambitious young man and made i
strong plea to the 1,500 voters pres
ent and was given great applause a
the end of his speech. Mr McLaurir
also made a good speech.
The unopposed candidates wen
not present. Hon J E Ellerbe, Con
gressman from the Sixth district
was present but did not speak.
Gov Cole L Blease was the nex

of applause and handclaps. Th<
Governor made his usual fiery speed
and told his hearers that his oppo
nent.Ira B Jones, voted with the ne
gro Anderson, then in the Legisla
ture from Georgetown, and a negrc
from Beaufort, five different time;
against the Jim Crow law, and saic
to the Georgetown people: "He triec
by this act to make your wives anc
daughters ride in the same seat wit!
the big buck negro men and negn
wenches." He also said MrJonei
voted for a divorce law.' Some on?
said he (Jones) wanted two wives.
Gov Blease then referred to some ol
the people in Georgetown not beinj
satisfied with his appointment of Mi
J B Johnson and Mr Munnerlyn ai
Road Engineer and Mr J Waltei
Doar as Superintendent of Educa
tion, but he said if they did not like
it,to help themselves. He was glac
to have a chance to ram it dowr
their throats. He said his opponent
had got mad in the House and re
signed as Speaker. He also got mac
with him (Blease) because he woulc
not appoint a special Judge to hole
court at Columbia and resigned his
office as Chief Justice. He has now
become an honorary ex-Chief Justice
and has lost his calling. The Gov
ernor was presented by the ladies
of Georgetown with a box of flow
ers as large as he could carry, and
was met at West Andrews on the
afternoon train and given flowers
and loudly cheered by the ladies anc
little girls. Hon
Ira B Jones also attemptec
to have his say but was howled dowr
by the yells for Blease. Judge Jones
referred to the Blease badges thai

crowd was fully marked with Blease
badges. Mr Jones was not giver
fair play. While the report of this
meeting in the Sunday News was
misleading and untrue, there wen
about 1,500 voters present, about
75"o of whom were Blease men.
After all had their say, Mr Duncan
made a very creditable speech,
but only a small number of voters
stayed to hear him.
On the train from Georgetown tc
Andrews in the afternoon there were
several fights, and a Mr Cannon oi
Andrews was badly cut with a knife
and some other men otherwise hurt,
all over the rolitics of the day.

of introducing a resolution
in effect discharging the national

as a presidential candidate to
