Mrs Julia Clarke, a woman wouldbe
aviator, was killed at the State
fair grounds, Springfield, 111, Monday
while attempting to make her
first flight.

At a negro ice cream festival
about four miles from St Stephens
Saturday night, one Clarence Frasier,
shot James Langley in the throat
with a .38 pistol.

Jackson Deas died of heart failure
while attending services at the Bennettsville
Baptist church Friday
night. He was stricken during the
nraver and was taken into the Sun
day-school room for attention, but
died in a few moments. Mr Deas
was one of the most highly respected
citizens of Bennettsville.

President Taft has vetoed the
army appropriation bill on account
of its "ousting" clause which would,
if put into force, legislate Major
General Leonard Wood out of his
present high position in the army,
and as a result of the President's
| veto it is said that the army will
have to fidget for subsistence.

The case of T U Vaughan, former
superintendent of the Odd Fellows'
home at Greenville, will be tried at
the regular term of the circuit court
in September. Vaughan is being
held in the Greenville county jail,
charged with having committed a
grave crime upon a girl inmate of
the home who was under fourteen
years ef age.
Hebron Items.
Hebron, June 17:?Mr Jack McElveen,
who has been in college at
Columbia, returned home Thursday
of last week and made his father's
and mother's hearts to feel glad that
he was a full graduate. We welcome
Mr McElveen's return to our
community.
We learn that the county chaingang
is to move here the early part
of this week, and we are glad to
hear such good news, for the writer
feels sure that we have not had a
particle of road work done in the
past twenty-four months, and if Mr
Eaddy expects a good vote here he
had better hustle.
Crops have improved wonderfully
since the weather has changed for
the warmer, but there is room for
still further improvement. Some of
the tobacco crop looks like it is going
to be short.
Misses J C Wilson and B 0 McClam
were the guests of Misses
Hattie and Effie Thomas on Saturday
night last, and Mr J C Wilson
was also a caller at the Misses
Thomas' home.
Mrs L T DuBose, who has been
spending some time at Hartsville
with her sister, has returned home.

part of the day Saturday at Lake I
