The young woman lid not look very much like herself yesterday. Her eyes were red and swollen and face very thin. She ap- ^ reared to be nervous and tired. The details of the affair are re- ; narkable. The couple arrived here Saturday night,June l,from Branchrille, where, Mrs Williams says, her . lusband stopped over to see about some property that he wanted to buy. On coming to Charleston they registered at the Academy Inn. Sunday morning the two went over to the Isle of Palms and spent the day at the seashore, returning to their room early that night. Mrs Williams says that, being fatigued trom the island trip, she retired about 8 o'clock, leaving Mr Williams awake iq a chair reading a paper. Abont 9 o'eloeh in the morning the wife arose and found that her husband was still awake. It was between that hour and morning, the wife thinks,that Williams decamped, leaving her with nothing but her hat and what night clothes she wore. In her own words, "he made a clean sweep." "The nerve of the brute," as the Unfortunate woman expressed It,left her penniless and With a two days' hotel bill .ftaring her in the face. Furthermore, she declares, Williams had removed fwfc gold rings and a pair of earrings from her person while she was sleeping. Among the other things taken by the man, according to his wife, were a gold locket and chain, a gold bracelet, $4 ;n cash and all of her clothing. Having nothing to wear, Mrs Williams applied to the Salvation Army, who cheerfully sent her a neat suit, hose and shoes. Previous to her marriage she1 worked in a lamp factory at Kalamazoo, and it was there that her husband met her while he was employed as a machinist. On receipt of transportation from her brothers in the Michigan city Saturday, Mrs Williams bought herself a ticket back home and the rest she offered to Mr Cockinos, proprietor of the Academy Inn, who had so generously cared for her. TO DIE IN ELECTRIC CHAIR. South Carolina's New Mode of Capital Punishment. Five prisoners in South Carolina are standing within the awful shadow of the electric chair, and these will be the first to pay the death penalty since the substitution of the chair for the gallows. The chair has not yet been installed at the penitentiary, though it is not likely that there will be any hitch in the execution of the death sentence by reason in placing the in the death house which 18 being constructed within the prison walls. According to the contract with the manufacturers the chair must have been completed and ready for operation before the first of July, Samuel N Hyde, the Anderson man who killed his wife and her father, asked Judge Prince, who sentenced him last week, to place the time so that he might be the first man to die in the electric chair in South Carolina. July 5 was the date named for the execution of Hyde. July 5 is also the date for the execution of Ernest Mulwee, colored, of Walhalla, convicted of murder, - - - ; 'Ivy On July 12 another negro roust go to the chair.
