HOMICIDE AT NESMITH
FRIDAY NIGHT.
SECTION MASTER ON MARION
BRANCH SHOT TO HEATH BY
KBuTMft B-IX-I.4W.
Nesmith, March 4:?Farmers of
this section are very badly behind
with their work on account of the.
bad weather. There are only a few who
have their soil broken up. Of;
course the land is entirely too wet
to plough, but some are ploughing: i
in the mud and going right ahead
anyway, but they will find out later
that it is injurious to the land to I
plough it in this condition.
The tobacco planters fiad begun
to think thev would have to plant
their beds again, but in spite of the
bad, cold weather, the little delicate
seeds are coming through and making
their appearance.
Mr Logan, a section master on
the Marion Branch railroad, who
has been living near this place, was
ihot and killed by his brother-inlaw
last Friday night near Black
river. From what we understand,
Mr Logan and his wife had not been
living a very pleasant life. On Friday
night Mr Logan came in about
midnight and found his wife had
gone. After investigating the mat?ter
he found she had left with her
brother late the previous afternoon
for his home. Following in pursuit
he found her there, and sent word
for her to come out, that she only
had a short time to live anyway.
She did not come out, so he started
in after her. His brother-in-law
told him not to enter the house.
/ Logan failed to obey, so he received
two loads from a pistol as a result,
taking effect about the waist, causing
instant death.
Mr L E Nesmith, formerly of
tnis place but now of Boston, Mass,
where he has been for the past three
years, spent several days with his
brother, Mr R J Nesmith, and other
relatives at this place.
Messrs T C Dukes and Thomas
Chandler,of the Benson section,spent
a few days in this vicinity last week.
