We really would l>e glad to respond to every call, but, as the lamented Doctor 0 W Holmes expressed it, we believe in charity mostly when, like a top, it logins "to hum" (Down East idiom for at home). It is a significant fact that last year Governor Blease had a following in the General Assembly equal to about one-half the membership in both branches, while this year there seems to l>e scarcely a baker's dozen to follow His Excellency and his erratic policies- That straws show the direction of ^the zephyrs anil ? Blease says that nothing but death will prevent his l>eing a candidate to succeed himself as Chief Executive of South Carolina. It is well. The people elected him and it is for them to say whether or not his record entitles him to reelection. Should he retire now, he would say, doubtless believing it to l>e true?for his self-conceit is ineffable?that had he chosen to run again he could have beaten any man in the field.
