Does it look like economy for the Governor to reward his personal and political friend at the expense of the taxpayers of the State? We think not. Again, we have the recent State House scandal, wherein it is proposed to bond the State to "repair" the State Capitol to the amount of a round million of dollars. A sub-committee employed a firm of architects to draw the plans and make a model of the million dollar building. The plans alone would have cost the State sixty thousand dollars and the tax-payers would l?e saddled with a million dollar bond issue. Diil Governor Blease come to the rescue and oppose this monumental extravagance? By no means. It is on record that His Excellency, on viewing the plans and the model remarked: "They are l>eautiful and if the Legislature accepts them, I will approve the bill,'* or words to that effect. We admit that Governor B!ca>e makes loud protestation- that he saves the taxpayers' money, and with the veto axe he actually did cut out a few thousand dollars from the appropriation hill ^last" year?a mere drop in the bucket. The Record is on record as standing for economical government in State, county and municipal affairs, and we have watched Governor Bleasc's course very carefully since has been in office. Without prejudice we reacli the inevitable conclusion that the Governor is inconsistent, if not insincere, when he inveighs against governmental extravagance. Let us examine the record." Only ^ a few weeks ago it was published in many of the newspapers of the State?and we never saw it contradicted?that Governor Blease had employed his friend, Col I^eon M Green, at a salary of two hundred dollars a month for five months to collect statistics relative to the cot" ton mills and factories of the State. The Colonel was paid one thousand dollars from the Governor's contingent fund, yet it was shown that his data submitted to the legislature was made up mainly of clippings from the Columbia State and yeans ago that a quarter of a million dollars was spent re-modeling the State House and when the money went many people said that the building was in worse condition than before. Thanks to the Legislature, the "grand model" of the Charleston architects was turned down and the tax-payers are saved this grievous burden temporarily, at any rate. But if our correspondent is depending on Governor Blease to save the State any considerable amount of tax money, we fear lie is leaning on a broken reed.
