"The day is cold and dark and dreary, And the snow is falling, never weary"? so to speak. It takes me back to the winters of '61 to '65, those gloomy days on the picket out-posts of the Army of Northern Virginia, where General Lee's veterans had^to face the storms of rain, sleet and snow, as well as thunder and lightning in summer. "Poor Conrad" was there doing his duty to his country along with the other ragged ones who made e wall of their breasts between Grant's host and the city of Richmond. ] will not dwell on war history: I want to say something about matters anc' times about home and friends whose love and kindness will be remenv bered by "Poor Conrad" as long as his heart's blood is warm. I had the great pleasure of meet ing an estimable fady from Sumter the widow of the late Mr B G Pier son. She was the- daughter of the late Mr Samuel Burgess, of Bethe section. Mr Burgess was an elder ir Bethel congregation. Mr Pierson'i father was the Presbyterian minis ter that preached at Midway anc Bethel churches. He was pastor ol Midway for 40 yeais and after the war when Bethel church was buili he preached at both churches. Mi Pierson was a native; of New Jersej * ? 1 o ? ai ana a loyai oouwciun. mo oum B G, Samuel and James, were veter an? of Lee's army. Tne old minister was a true sol dier and veteran of the cross anc died the Christian soldier's death, ? death that will long be remembered by all who were present at Bethel church on that day. Mr Samuel Burgess, the old elder, usually sat or one of the front seats and on thai day in particular he was to act 8 hero's part. The congregation noticed that the old minister was about to break down; he looked up and said, "Help!" Mr Burgess leaped over the seats and rushed up into the pulpit in time for Mr Pierson to fall into his arms and die. My friends, that was a heart-melting scene. Mr McCoy, the minister of the "Brick Church" in Sumter county, preached the funeral sermon some time after, and when he said the old soldier died aw if oonuon q cur^ll. witn ma Biuiui'uu, ik k. u?v? ing in my throat and I could scarcely keep from sobbing like a child. Mr Henry McElveen was also ar elder of Bethel. His Christian wife was the mother of Mr George Mc Elveen. She too has gone to the world unknown by mortals here be low. My hope is that she will inter cede for the one to whom she gavt the name of "Poor Conrad", anc 1 when I shall stand withcut amonp the great host at the gates of th< 1 Eternal City that are guarded bj Cherubim with flaming swords, ] feel that she will say to St Peter "I see one in that crowd." "Well ' who is it?" "Poor Conrad; St Peter ' can't he come in? He loved am 1 petted my children." ? Since meeting Mrs Pierson I wa i pleased to meet the widow of Mr 1 t J R Wilson. She was the daughter o I i Mrs McElveen by her first husband ? Mr John Epps, and last Sunday ] was pleased to meet Mrs Mary Ad > ams, the widow of Mr Eliot Adams father of Mr James Adams of Kings tree. Thirty-five years have passe< , since I saw her and I was glad h see her in good health.
