FACETIOUS DISCUSSION OF CURRENT TOPICS. INCLUDING THE SNOW. "Hello! Mr Editor:?" "Yes, J? at the grape vine, Central, Florence County, S C." "What are we doing up here? Why, we are now in the midst of the worst snow storm we've had for years and years." "Oh, yes, this 'up-country' has many disadvantages, as well as advantages. What are you fellows 'way down in Old Williamsburg doing these hard times, picking cotton, eh? Better get through with it before the frost is all gone, as we up-country fellows win De airaia then to go down and help you on account of the malaria, don't you - know?" "What do you suppose Friend Bass is doing? Out gathering flowers, I guess, or sitting on his porch fanning, and the water actually freezing in my dining-room with a big oak log fire burning, not 18 feet away." "Can't hear? Well, the vine is frozen up at this end of the line. I said I was sending you a whole dollar; not a dollar with a hole in it, but a perfect dollar long past due for The Record; hope all others in arrears will do likewise." (Now we hear all right.?Editor). "Say, those little labels you are sticking on 'em now are worth their. weight in gold to vou; hope they'll prove so, at least. And is there one whose soul's like clay, who reads The Record and then won't pay? If such there be he's a clay-eater sure, ' and should be disfranchised, and i not allowed the great privilege of voting for Gov Blease next sum?i mer. ? "Yes, sorry indeed, I hadn't nary 1 rpossum to send you for Xmas, but 1 my dog died early in the fall. Yes, < yes, seems like a poor man's troubles ' never end. Sure, I did have some ; shoats, but furnished so many barbecues for the Bankers' Bank-ets up ; here of late ? nothing you know like tickling the palate for tackling ' the pocket?ha! ha! And nothing now quite so bon-ton, as barbecued pig at the Hal-cy-on." ; "So, you see, I'm now completely run short on 'em and the pig's all up on that score for a while, at 1 least." "No dispensary yet, you say, nor blind-tigers, either!
