How Conditions Might Be
Changed to Advantage, 1

We discussed in your columns ten 1
days ago the mortgage and lien law,
also the tax system,which are known
as Nos. 1 and 2; now come the live ;
stock dealer and the jury law, Nos. c
3 and 4.
I had a conversation this past v
week with a responsible farmer of *
our county who told me he went to 8
one of our live-stock dealers about ^
three years ago to buy a horse. r
After driving the horse which he
wanted, he asked the price of it ^
and was told $90. Now, he offers v
for the horse $50 down and $40 in C
the fall. "No," says the horse deal- 1
es, "you have the money and I must y
have all cash." The farmer refused
to pay cash, but went home to a j t
negro tenant and said: "Here, Jack, e
is $15; go to Mr Live Stock Dealer
and buy a certain horse" (describing
the horse). Then, to the farmer's
surprise, the negro came back ^
with the horse for $90,with $15 paid ^
cash, and balance payable in the fall
with only security on the horse. ^
Here is where rests some of the i ^
blame for scarcity of labor. I mean!,

no reflection, but offer this as an
eye-opener.
Now, fellow-citizens of our county,I
want to make a few remarks as ^
to our jury law. At the out-set, If j J
you had an important case in court, f
would you hunt an unlearned attor- v
ney,or would you want the best you |
could get? Of course the latter is c
what you wouid employ. Well, I
then, why should one be forced to j 1
take persons without any qualifica- s
cation to decide our cases in court?;'

Even our lives to be in the hands of t
men without any qualification. If r
any law ever needed purging in c
South Carolina it is the jury law. *
Let every juror stand a rigid examination
before being admitted to sit e
--,n a inrv to decide a case. Some-11
times our Judges on the bench have I
to set aside decisions of jurors. We

know better jury laws can be made. ^

, two weeks, beginning today (Thurs- (
! day) and continuing until Thursday,
January 4,1912.
j Yesterday, the advent of the hol'
idav season was marked by an entere
tainment at the school-house lasting
from 10 a.m.till 1 p. m., and a number
of patrons and friends of the
n school gathered to witness the exercises,
which were highly interesting |
and entertaining. We really would
3 like to give the entire attractive
n programme, but it being so late in j
e the week we cannot do justice to j
y the occasion. Every number on the
; programme ? songs, music, plays,
drills and charades, in which the j
y whole student body took some part
y ?was liberally applauded. One
a number, the doll drill, by a bevy of
r pretty little girls with their dollies,
t was particularly pleasing, showing
? real talent and excellent training on
e the part of the little folk. Another
piece, which was much enjoyed and
f would have done credit to a more
s pretentious occasion, was the song
sung by the entire school in chorus.
The fresh young voices,vibrant with
youth and enthusiasm, blended in
' exquisite harmony as the grand
g melody resounded through the spacious
auditorium.
Another interesting feature of the
entertainment was the awarding of
y
two prizes for the two rooms most
prettily decorated. The award was
11 made by a committee comprising the

rooms were so pretty and tastefully i
P.done that it took the committee j
! quite a while to decide upon the two

t Kirk, Esq, in his usual felicitous
. phraseology, that the first prize?a
a handsome picture,framed?was won
a by the 8th and ?>th grades, taught
a by Miss Walker, and the second
prize, a copy of Webster's diction^
ary, was awarded to the 1st grade,
taught by Miss Erckmann.
