Negro Sccrc* Orders.
On account of the multiplicity of
negro secret societies and the criticism
arising therefrom, the following
clipping from the Charleston
Messenger, a newspaper published
by and for the colored people, is
timely and appropriate:
There is an opinion prevailing in
the State on the part of the white
man to do away with negro societies,
for what reason we are unable to say.
It is quite certain that the greatest
harm in these societies is done to the
negro himself in fighting and stealing
from.each other. The white man
need never be afraid that the negro
is plotting against him. The negroes
are too far apart in the innermost
parts cf their hearts to unite and
plot against any other race. The
negroes who conduct secret societies
have more faith and chnfidence in an
ordinary white man than in all the
negroes that compose the societies
put together.
Our advice to the negro is: Drop

SCHOOLS RECEIVE STATE AID.
More Than $1*000 Distributed
Among Thirteen Schools.
Editor County Record:?
The following are all the schools
for which 1 have been able to pet
State aid this fall. Some have failed
because they had not opened in time
for me to get necessary data for application;
some because the teachers
had not registered their certificates.
I expect several more to qualify for
aid after the Legislature makes the
usual appropriation in February.
