Andrews, October 8: ?Mr John S

Graham passed through town lasl
Friday returning to his home frorr
Asheville, N C, where he has beer
seeking health for the past twe
months. I am sorry to say that Mi
Graham did not improve as his
friends hoped he would, but trust
that he may yet be restored to his
health and strength and be spared tc

Mr Graham and the father of the
writer were always warm friends. 1
have heard my father make the remark
on many occasions while Hon
John S Graham and Dr A H Wilj
liams were in our House of Representatives
and State Senate, respectively,
that he feared no danger of
any law that would injure our peo
pie, even the enactment of the stock
| law. See the confidence he felt in
these men. The writer thinks if our
State were made up of such men we
v
would have quite a different country.
We believe if we have this warm re8l*
* i
gard for our friends on earth we
should express it to them ere they
depart this life.

pi.
Our town is fast getting rid of
some of its most undesirable citizens.
Some time ago we made mention of
a set of white boys who had broken
into the express office and stolen a
lot of whisky. They were made to
pay for the stolen goods and the
boys with their parents to leave the
State. The mother and one boy about
? 15 or 16 years old came back here
some few months ago and the boy
loafed around town for a week. He
was finally hired by a farmer who
took him home with him. H?
robbed this employer of his pocketbook
and $19. He then ran away
and, coming back to town, stole $20
from another party and a bottle of
whisky out of e. man's buggy. All
these acts committed from Saturday
night to Monday afternoon. The
boy is still at large, hunting some'
thing else to steal. Beware of him
as a pick-pocket.
Our city fathers have ordered the
removal of one George Wineglass,
eolored, who has been operating a
house of ill fame and running a blind
? tiger right along in the tracks of
Mamie Williame. who was convicted
?f that crime at the last court. Our
town officers are determined that such
* nuisances shall be abated here, rer
*
gardless of who rents them houses.
Both of those negro dives have made
attempts to operate their places
right on Main street and have had the
co-operation of some white people.
t What a shame and disgrace to humanity!
At the Wineglass dive is
where one negro shot another to
death last spring, and at Mamie Williams'
is where the two white men
got into a difficulty and one was
shot and the other cut nearly to
death. Still some white people will
use every effort to maintain such
places in town, but our officers say
the evil-doers must go and go now.

We hope the friends of The Record,
when they come to town to do
their trading,will patronize the business
houses that advertise in this
paper. Remember that without these
liberal merchants, bankers and other
enterprising business men, the price
of subscription would be at least $3
a year for such a paper as The Record.
You'll find, as a rule, that the
men who advertise are wide-awake
and on the alert and can give you
better bargains than those who do
not advertise. This applies not only
to Kingstree, but many live and upto-date
business men of Lake City,
Scranton and Greelyville recognize
the pulling power. of an ad in The
r-' ' \ Record. tf

Southern cotton growers organize
and control the price of cotto i? It is
as easy for the cotton growers to p
take care of themselves as it is for T(
the fruit growers and grain growers
of the West. If we will hold ov.r cot- g
ton off the market the price will ad,
vance. But if we continue the mad
rush as it has been so far, the price U1
will go lower. Brother farmer, for Vl
2'
the sake of your families who helped
you to make that cotton, hold it off
the market till the prices become ^
better. You can hold, the banker
stands ready to help you. ?*
There is no excuse for the farmer 1
to sacrifice his labors in giving away
his cotton. There is a plenty of available
money to enable the cotton
grower to v/arehouse his cotton and '
get profitable prices for it. Farmers, ^
be wise and hold your cotton.

be much interest manifested on the

that the warehouse, while repairs s

to appoint a committee of at least
three to canvass the county and try I
to prevail on the farmers to hold I
their cotton and to ascertain hotv ?
many bales will lie held for 13c. It fe

check the rush of cotton on the market,
this year's crop will be sold below
the cost of production.
