Now that Senator Bailey, Senator
Tillman's guide, philosopher and
friend, has resigned, perhaps the
junior Senator may not be so
f - keen to run next summer. At
any rate, "Uncle Jasp" Talbert,
one of Tillman's ablest lieutenants
in the 90's, will make things
mighty interesting, even though
he fails to defeat his old chief.
Suppose young Beattie had
happened to commit his dastardly
crime in South Carolina and
his wealthy and influential father
had perchance been one of His
Excellency's friends. Think you,
? despite the verdict of the jury,
he would ever expiate his crime
on the gallows? In South Carolina
murder is still a crime?if
one of "my enemies" commits
it; otherwise not, it seems.
Governor Blease seems to be
eager to enter the Senatorial
race, but "hut he does n't care to
oppose Senator Tillman." How
magnamimous on the part of his
excellent Excellency, when it is
no secret that a few years gone
the two Statesmen were bitterly
antagonistic. To a looker-on it
seems that Tillman is the one man

the whyness of his kowtowing to
the senior Senator.

commuted the sentence of a murderer

Three robbers last week wrecked
the Bank of Montreal's branch bank
at Westminster. British Columbia,
and stole $315,000. Thi$ is said to be
the biggest bank robbery on record.

Premier Stolvpin was shot and fatally
wounded Thursday of last week (

disappeared from his post at Fort i

A story comes from Gaffney that
Mrs L C McGrume of that town,
who is seventy years old and has
been toothless for fourteen years, is
growing a new set of teeth. Eight
have already been cut and her swollen
gums indicate a full set of new
teeth.
