I Lake City, August 29:?Miss Viv- j ian Parrott, of Old Effingham, visited her cousins, Misses Sallie and Gretchen Bass, last week. Or W S Lynch was noted in town from Scranton one day last week. last interviewed Sunday he was1 weeping large "weeps" in anticipa-! tion of the meeting of Monday's court. The way of the transgressorr is hard, but the lot of the communi-' ty that bears the blame for his: meanress, is harder still. The storm of Sunday and Monday J did yery little damage here. The ! rain fell in torrents, wetting the earth . as it had not been wet in a year, and the wind broke off some leaves and rotten limbs and scared folks gen erally. Most all roofs leaked and sjwinniinmiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiini I Our I i . + + + + + + + + WARNE1 Thei side from the shape, stless virtue, and its wear as long as any n the celluloid-tippet K1NGSTR -*? ? ? ? ? ? ?*??*f"? ???"f"? some to such an extent as to damage furniture, etc. Further than this there was hut little damage. Mrs W T Moody, who has been On last Friday, just as Mr J S Lynch was about entering his bug-1 gy at the Baptist church at Seranton to return to his home in Lake City, the horse, taking fright at an umbrella, dashed off, knocking Mr Lynch down and dragging the buggy over his body. He was bruised j so bdEly that he was unable to be out for a few days, but was not se-; riously injured. Dr L D Bass and daughter, Miss Oneida, of Mexia, Tex, spent last week in town with relatives. They were on their way home from a tour of about three months in Europe. Mr W C Kelley of Marion was in town the early part of last week. Some folks seem determined to A keep the record up. Three fights, are the entries for the week just closed. First, two young white ' men, who would hardly be pleased j to see their names mentioned here, had a general Mmix-up." We understand that knucks and so on were employed and that .the blood flowed freely. The town's contribution box got about $50 out of this. Next, j Zingle Brown hit Isaac Burgess over the head with a piece of wood and, mirabile di? fu!t the skull was cracked. Isaac walked into town, had the shingles of his roof patched,' bought a box of shells and went hunting for Zingle. The chaingang got thirty days out of Zingle and the General Sessions court got a "nigger" to try for "busting" another "nigger's" head. Then Sam Cockfield boarded the train, got into a regular "hot-supper" row, broke out a few windows of the car, and J went to the "refrigerator." For j the present they are at the Halcyon Hotel. Application for a charter for the J M Truluck company has been made to the Secretary of State.v The capital stock is to be $25,000, and this company will deal in live stock, vehicles, harness and saddlery. It will take over the business of Mr J M Truluck, who will be president of the new company.. The promo-I ters of the enterprise are Messrs J , M Truluck, Joe M Eaddy, L R Tru-: luck and J Frank Finegan. Mr Hayden J McKenzie was in Florence Saturday on business. Mr E R Rodgers has sold his in-1 "erest in the business of Rodgers & Wells to his copartner, Mr D T Wells. Mr' Wells will continue the mill business, and Mr Rodgers will; open up a general hardware mercantile business. The store house i lately occupied by Mr W T Askins, has been secured by Mr Rodgers for his hardware store. iiMrlnvcf on/1 f Kof f T obo ?f ? i | | I R'S RUS re are many point WARNER which is conceded i service reliability. r fabric can wear; r .1 bones break or pi EE DRY ft *fr? AN INDEPENDENT STAND. Florence County Trustees Refuse Behest of State Board Education A feature of the meeting: of tht Florence county school trustees' as> sociation, held at Howe's grove neai this city, today, was the passage o1 resolutions denouncing the recenl school book adoption. The resolu tions, besides criticising the boarc for making the changes, goes on t< "inform our State Superihtendent ol Education that we can not and wil not require our schools to confornr to the change." J E Swearingen, State Superin tcndent of Education, who was pres ent, said that he fully appreciated th? spirit of the members of the associa tion, as his feelings were the same. An interesting programme for the meeting had been prepared by Super intendent Gasque, and it was heart ily discussed by the trustees. The subject discussed today pertainec principally to the preparation foi opening the county schools, numbei of hours required for school day care of the grounds and buildings county teachers' association, needed changes in the method of adoptior of text books. The following resolution was offered by J S McKenzie and unanimously carried: "Whereas, The State board of education has seen fit to change 80 pei cent, of the text books for the countj schools of this State, and therebj causing an unjust and heavy burder on our people ; therefore be it "Resolved, first, That we most severely criticise said board for this great injustice done our people ol the State by their action and forcing, as it does, many dollars from our citizens without giving the people an.v satisfactory reason for so doing. "Second, That we, the trustees oi Florence county, condemn the action of said board. "Third, That we respectfully in0 form our State Superintendent of Education that we can not and will not require the patrons of our schools tc conform to the change. "Fourth, That we extend to State Superintendent Swearingen our hearty appreciation for the stand he has taken in this matter and for the information he has given us." "In the afternoon Messrs Watson, Knapp, Baker, Smith, and others, who are touring the State with the intention of talking scientific farming to the farmers, arrived and made addresses to the large audience on agricultural and educational development, congratulating this section on the work being done along these lines. Dr \V S Stokes, some months ago, started a paper at Marion, and his sons have been carrying on The News here since then. Now, for reasons best known to the owner, The News is to be discontinued. This adds another item to the long list of unsuccesful newspaper ventures at this place. 1 It does seem that Lake City could support a paper as well as some ' other towns at which they succeed, but the fact remains that failfire has been the lot of every venture so far. 1 What is the cause? Messrs L H Howie, E J Wilkes, W j E Severance, et al, went to Norfolk, ^ Richmond, Washington, etal, last week ,, and most of them came back home wilted collars, shriveled stomachs,et al, best not specified. A HARROWING EXPERIENCE. ! Prof. Swittenbergand Family on . | the Island During Storm. ;[ Prof and Mrs .J W Swittenberg and their visitors, Mrs J W Riser " and infant child, from New Decatur, ^ Alabama, were on Sullivan's Island t Saturday and Sunday, during the ^ hurricane, not being able to get I away until Monday afternoon. > Mr Swittenberg relates a thrilling f experience Saturday night and realI ly his party must have had an un> pleasantly narrow escape from death or serious injury.
