NEGRO BURNT TO DEATH, IN OKLAHOMA' f FOR ASSAULTING WHITE W OMAN --NO NOISE OR EXCITEMENT? j m^WD QUIET BUT DETERMINED. Pureed, Okla. August 24:?While 3.00O men.women and children stood i by. shouting their approval, Peter f ~ j Larter.a negro, wno nau previous been captured by three members of his own race and identified as the! man who last ni>rht attacked Mrs o Minnie Sprains, wife of a farmer,1 was burned to death on a brush pile, I ^ in the main street of Purcell. at 5 jo'clock this afternoon. j f Deputy Sheriff Hayes and I'nder ji Sheriff Farns.who attempted to res- s cue the nepro from the crowd, were r overpowe.-ed and locked in the court ' house. j n Mrs Sprayyin- was assaulted while v alone in her home, one nr!e south of , n Puree!!. After the deed the negn ij set Hre to the Sprains home. Mrs, ^ Spraggins's husband saw the llanies J J, r while working in the fields and rush \ ed into the house in time to rescue his wife. She declared that Carter, who formerly worked on the Sprag- v gins's farm.had attacked her. Officers ^ went to Carter's home and arrested p him. He was turned over to a con- n stable but on the way to jail es- e , caped. When it became known tha' b the nepro was free, farmers of the C' f neighborhood organized a posse and ^ an all-nipht search was made. Thele negro was not found. This afternoon Hiplev Henry, a a negro janitor, noticed a strange negro riding under a box car near the Oklahoma Central Railway station, n With the aid of two other negroes, gl who had armed themselves, the ne- ^ pro janitor pulled Carter from be- fl neath the car. He was taken to the j main street of Purcell, where a grea' J ? ? crowd had gathered. jt "Turn that nepro over tome,"1 said a tall farmer, who suddenly I seemed to assume command of th> j crowd. i q The janitor and his two aides p ' obeyed. Carter was taken across the c street and in an instant many men en.-l krtvc iroro crathprpd At this _ C41IV4 *^v.. jj jurflKire Deputy Sheriff Hayes and a : Sheriff Farris arrived and pleaded with the mob to turn the prisoner over t<> them. The Sheritf and his assistant were locked up and a the negro was led out and placed ?>n ^ an oil-soaked brush heap, built L arounh a telephone pole. He was d { tied to the pole and the torch ap* ^ plied. Cheers came from the crowd ' ! as the flames licked the victim's j, face, and men and women in motor d 1 ? cars watched him die. As he was lashed to the pole the negro shrieked . for mercy. After the flames died down the crowd slowly dispersed. ^ The negro's bodv was burned to a ,F crisp. ; ^ Mrs Spraggins, who is not expect-!t ed to live, said Carter entered her i v home last night and struck her on j | o the head with a gas pipe.beating her : until she was unconscious. An oi l mattress was torn up and scattered i over her body. After the negro had i set the mattres* ?n lire he tied As Mrs Spraggins wa.- crawling from (' ; under the tire th-* negro reapjH'ar-'d , and again struck ner wun ine pq*-, , breaking her jaw and beating her \ 1 badly. Her husband, rushing to the , i house, rescued his wife, unc tnscious. In a few minutes more she would t have been dead. The pile of wood and brush on r the negro's body was burned j was still smouldering at 10 o'clock ;' to-night. The town was quiet. The ; cheers of the crowd when the first j flames shot up mingled with the j piercing cries of the negro, and after 1;he fire had burned for an hour ] and the body was nothing but a: crisp, the crowd again cheered. Then ; it dispersed. A remarkable feature about the ' affair was that while the crowd was ? determined upon the death of the | negro, it was far more quiet than ! usual under similar conditions. Not l , a shot was fired. The escape of the j negro, following his arrest, seemed s to add to the fury of the searchers 1 for fhe black man. Talk about the town to-night, fol[ k IK owing the lynching, bears the message of the negro that he was "the x'ght man." As whispered fr-m lip .< ]i]i comes a brief confession.made is he was led t-> his funeral pyre. TAKE IT IV TIME, lur.f as Scores of Kingstree Fenpie Have. Waiting doesn't pay.
