HI The hurricane which bore down ^Kpon Charleston Sunday evening, HiTu which held the city in its grip ^Hhroughout Sunday night, passed on ^Rarly yesterday, leaving behind it trail of death and wreckage un^Hparalleled in this community since ^^the great storm of 1893. i Six deaths are known to have been j B caused by the hurricane. Besides B that of Engineer Coburn, two young men and a negro woman were killed B in Mount Pleasant, and two white ( B women were drowned in Charleston. The names of the dead are: Alonzo J Coburn, E V'Cutter, Rosa Robinson and Ida Morgan of Charleston; 1 Robt E Smith of Columbia, and an B unknown colored woman. (Later? B Since the above report the death roll has increased to fifteen persons. I Besides these, rumors of a number W of other drownings and killings have I been brought in, but these it has I been impossible to corroborate. B . impossible as yet to say just B h " ^reat has been the property B loss as a result of the hurricane's work. No reports from the sea is^B lands or from coast have yet ^Bbeen obtainable. BB In the immediate vicinity of ^ Charleston estimates vary from a juarter of a million dollars upward. H It is probable that the is about Ba million dollars. That is the figure ^Banumfrerof nloS^ capable ob servers hit upon. Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms both came through the storm B with no loss of life on either island, ^B but the night was one of great ter^B ror on both, and much damage has M been done on both. Many houses on Sullivan's Island have l^eer ^B wrecked, and the hotel on the Isle of Palms suffered severely. The B transportation system has been put r| KIN* , Ij We wish 1 jxjj 1st. The hurricane was at its height at ! midnight Sunday night, when the j wind attained a velocity of 94 miles j the hour and the barometer dropped ! to 29.43. The wind continued to j blow fiercely until about daylight j and then gradually subsided until! the storm passed on somewhere to ; the south of Charleston and island ? the weather bureau does not know just where. In Charleston the greatest damage. of course, was done along the water front, but practically every house south of Calhoun street testified to the fury of the gale. Along Broad street, Blast Ba\, King and Meeting streets scores of residences and places of business were unroofed and had the windows blown out. The rain, which fell heavily last night was in consequence most unwelcome, even though accompanied by but little wind. Hundreds of trees in all parts of the city were blown down or split to pieces. The street- everywhere yesterday were filled with, wreckage of all ? * sorts. Little business was transuded. The work of repairing the damage' has already progressed well, however, and the street railwav will t * be in operation today and the streets, it is premised, will be open to traffic. Communication with the outside world has been re-established, trains 'operating from the old Line street station, of the Southern Railway, the Union station living put out oj commi s on temporarily. No telegraph wires are yet beinp worked into Charleston, but thi Western Union sent operators t? Summerville. which scarcely fell the storm at all, and sent and received messages there, bringing them to Charleston by train.
