the pleasure <<f meeting Mr l>abi<and
hearinir his sjKvches ow ? the
county. Mr 1 >al?I>> is a close and intelligent
observer and it is \er>
gratifying to know that he was < >
favorably impressed with what our
people are doing and have already
accomplished in the way of material
progress along all lines.
Incidentally we may say that Mr
Dabbs has a forceful personality, a
pleasant address and prepossessing
manner and without intending any
reflection on his predecessors in office.
we feel sure that under his
able guidance the State Farmers'
Union will take <>n new life an<i
prosper as it has never 'lone Ivf -re.
The article referred to foii.?ws:
"On my recent trip to Williamsburg
I ran across some things that
denote progress. A* (lourdins I dined
with Mr ("arkson. who has a fine
farm and hoautifully appointed
home. While waiting for the rain to
cease he told me how he utilizes the
lime from his light plant with a
force pump. He said this litth- pump
that cost oo and is used for spraying
fruit trees beat a brush in applying
whitewash to his buildings
and fences. By removing the spray
a solid stream of whitewash is
thrown against the building and he
can stand on the ground and whitewash
every building on his place.
This little pump is also useful for
washing buggies, autos.windows and
would be of great service in the early
stages of a tire. Mr Clarkson says
he finds the acetyline lime as good
for whitewashing as the best quick
' r
lime.
. "Near Kloomingvale Mr Camlin^^had
me to stop to see his fine corn on
Smith's bay, a Black river tributary
some 15 miles southeast of Kingstree.
He has corn good for ?>o bush
els j?er acre >?n land that has made
consecutive crops without Any
fertilizer. Hut it is about his novel
method of cultivation that I wish to
write. Aft* r he had laid by the corn,
"sheep-burs" came up by the millions:
they were about six inches to
one foot hiirh. and he said as they
were "sheep burs" he would see if
sheep would not eat them. We!!,
the sheep were in there.head.and
the cockle-burs were disap|>earinjr.
And. strand* to say. they were not
troubling the corn. A week later he
told me he had taken the sheep out.
as they had grazed the burs well
down and they mijrht start or. the
