AFFAIRS OF INTEREST
AT ANDREWS.
TIVO SAD DEATHS -GOOD WORK
OF ROAD BUILDERS?A SURPRISE
PARTY-PERSONAL.
Andrews, August 7: ?Our community
was saddened Saturday afternoon
bv news of the death of Mrs
S J Avant. Mr and Mrs Avant were
both from this neighborhood but
had recently moved to Kingstree.
She leaves an aped husband, several
grown children and a host of friends
and relatives to mourn her death.
Mrs Avant was an estimable Christian
lady. She was laid to rest at the
family burying ground near their
old home.
A young Mr Etheridge died of
typhoid fever in the Big Dam
Swamp neighborhood last week. The
unfortuate young man was a mute, j
both deaf and dumb, but was quiet
and intelligent, considering his affliction.
Nearly every one who knew
him was fond of talking to him by
signs.
The writer was presented with
j waIamc 1 ocf nnp
IWU Vtri V illlC IIICIUUO IUOI. nvv?,
by my good friend and one of our
best farmers, Mr E K McKnight, of
West Andrews: also one weighing
42 pounds by our friend, Magistrate
Crooks. Those two melons
were of the finest quality I have
. ever had the pleasure of eating. Mr
Crooks and Mr McKnight are both
successful farmers and big-hearted
and good neighbors. Such, men
make one happy to live by them.
The writer made a flying trip to
the State capital the past week, and
was surprised at the awful damage
by drought in and around Sumter.
I saw fields of corn with not a green
blade visible and large shade trees
in the streets were dead from lack
of moisture. In other sections I saw
'< t
fine crops, around Manning and
Wedgefield especially. Sumter is i
worse condition than we are here.
Mr W T Evans, of the Feagin &
Marshall Co, has left for his summer
vacation and, with his family,is visiting
his uncle,Mr William Evans.near
Waycross, Ga. He will stop for a
few days at the Isle of Palms.
I understand that quite a number
of our people contemplate taking in
, ? the excursion to the mountains on
the 16th inst.
LeRoy Lee,Esq,was in town a few
days ago on professional business.
He was defending some young white
v men who did not know their own
stock and through carelessness saw
fit to take and eat one of their,
neighbor's cows.
The county road builders are
making good headway on the old
Gapway road. They have the road
worked near the Spring Gully bridges
and it doesn't look like the same
road after being graded and made
perfectly straight. Let our people
hold up the hands of Mr John M
Eaddv and see if we don't have good
roads all over our county.
One of the delightful social events
of the week was the surprise party
at Mr and Mrs Bachman Doar's last
Friday night. The merry crowd
gathered about 8:30 p. m. and stayed
until the clock chimed twelve. Oldfashioned
games were played, and
the songs and piano selections by
Miss Ruth Isokreit were especially
enjoyable. Those who enjoyed Mrs
Doar's hospitality are: Misses Ulma
Crooks, Ossie Camlin, Mamie Pipkin,
Ruth Isokreit, Sue Bailey, Mrs
Blanche Hughes; Messrs H W Medlin,
Arthur Flowers, Frank Fulton,
Dunum Herring, George Hanks, Drs
J W Davis and T R Howie.

How to Get a Fair Price for Cotton |
Present prospects are that there
will be a bip cotton crop this year.
This hip crop, if it conies.will be due
entirely to the work of the farmers
' of the South. It is poinp to be worth
a bip lot of money, too, and will brinp
handsome profits to somebody.
It is,of course, unreasonable to expect
cotton to brinp as much per
pound when there is a larpe crop as
when there is a small one; but it is
even more unreasonable for prices to
be hammered down when a pood crop
is made so that a larpe crop may ac- j
tually brinp less money than a small I
TV,
ill*u nave vv ovu wwvv/u Mtiv* j
He still has time to make sure of
this; but he must act at once.
(2) He can, if he will start, have
hogs enough to kill so that he will
not have to sell cotton and buy meat.
(3) He can keep the garden going ,
and raise his own vegetables and;
maybe a surplus.
(4) He can take care of the poultry
and the cows and make them a
source of income.
There are other thiftgs he can do to (
makehimself independentof hiscotton'
cropjand every man who is able to hold j
his cotton and market as he chooses
can help to insure profitable prices !
for the crop, while every man who !
must sell is going to help depress the !
price.
Acting together, farmers can
agree upon a plan of marketing and j
j keep the whole crop from being
farced on the market at once. They
can make arrangements with their !
local bankers for loans, if they need
ready money in the fall. In many
cases the farmers themselves can finance
the cotton crop of their neighborhood
by helping out with shorttime
loans, secured by the cotton
crop, those who would otherwise
have to sell at once. They can keep
negro tenants from rushing the
whole crop on the market as soon as
made, and this they must do if they
would keep up prices. Every neighborhood
which handles its crop in a
business-like way will help to maintain
prices ana will help to bring (
nearer the much-dreamed-of day of
scientific marketing.?Raleigh (JVC)

the foundation of the disease, and jrivinir

men who buy cotton are going to do
all they can to force the price as low j

Tnis inquiry is likely to be met by
another: What can they do about it?
