It is the opinion of many of ou most progressive and best busines men engaged and interested in grow ing cotton that the recent movemer in the cotton mill merging is fraugh with danger to the interest of bot cotton growers and cotton mill If borers in their present incomplete unorganized condition, and that i behooves every man engaged i growing cotton and cotton operativ who has the welfare of himself an his family at heart to now asser their manhood, pluck and grit b uniting themselves with their re spective organizations in a stron; S ' and righteous covenant for thei mutual protection and benefit. No doubt these mill men at th head of this consolidation movemen are prepared to show that in order t -J- C1-1.U tr. maintain prontauic uiviuchus xv their stockholders, this economic re lief, sought for the purpose of cut ting off the heads of some,of thei "top-heavy" mills, is necessary; bu at the same time they are preparinj themselves to use their two*edgei sword for cutting prices of cotton,a well as wages of their operatives. When we consider that the farm ing interest of the South has mor< than seven ($7.00) dollars invested ii this occupation where the combinei manufacturing interest has one ($1 dollar in its business, and that th< & * voting power of the cotton growei and cotton spinner in South Carolini can sweep the State for any right measure for the good of our peoph ?that cotton growers and cottoi mill operatives, too, deserve all th< punishment tradition has awardec to a cowardlv, inactive giant tha' IV i slept while the Liliputians bounc him hard and fast. When the mills combined in a com pact organization under the manage ment of their best men, with cottoi growers and mill operatives compar atively unorganized, who can doub the mills having absolute contro over the whole situation, regardles of the fact that cotton growers am cotton mill operatives have all th< requisites for controlling the situa tion? But for the lack of completi organization this power is unavaila ble. No amount of calamity howling b: unorganized individuals can.eve; penetrate the hearts of soulless cor porations that have no hearts. Abso lutely nothing short of a powerfu organization among farmers and mil f operatives can protect tneir interes and back their demands for a squari deal, and the sooner every mother': son of our people in this business i: educated up to a full knowledge o: ? this fact,the better it will be for th< peace and prosperity of our whol< State. m Prodding of a Dozing Bull. Whether or not it will ever be nec essary or desirable by cotton grow ers and mill operatives to affiliate fior their mutual protection is noi before us at present, but if such i combination or affiliation should tx necessary in the future, that thi." prodding of a dozing bull by com bination of cotton mill owners will b< resnonsible for it. We are not urg ing a strong organization for th< purpose of righting mill owers, for we need nulls to spin our cotton as much as mill men need the cotton t( spin. Both mill owners and cottor men are in the business for profits and not for their health or charity'; 3ake.
