July 4 was' pleasantly spent by the neighbor-! hood folk and a goodly number of , visiting friends who gathered early, in the morning at the Spann old place j with the usual concomitant of well i filled baskets, containing dainty edi- j bles especially prepared for gratify-! ing appetites on this holiday oe-1 casion. Hard by was a barrel filled j with ice-cold lemonade to lend-an-aid in keeping the people cool, as the 1 committee anticipated the fulfillment: of the weather bureau's prognosti-j cation for the hottest Fourth in a i score of years. But the day was fine j ?an ideal summer day, free from I humidity and with a gentle breeze ^ waving the umbrageous foliage of | the oaks in the grove, making it cool j all day long for the pleasure-seekers' as thev strolled down the shaded vistas of the lawn and listened to the sweet-voiced feathered songster- in their leafy bowers. All nature seemed attuned to make the day one of bright sunshine, beauty and gladsome gayety. The Benson baseball team arranged everything for entertaining royally the Spring Gullv boys, who were expected to play a game of ball in the afternoon. But the visitors tailed to show up. Notwithstanding their failure to come, the home team picked up enough boys to .twirl the ball to the diversion of the enthusiastic fans. The only untoward incident to mar the day's pleasure came when Tom Phillips attempted to push a bicycle a short distance out of somebody's way. In doing so the pedal struck * the muscular part of the young i man's leg below the knee, cutting the flesh so badly that Dr Kelley was summoned hastily. The wound required several stitches. Tom is walking on crutches now, but no doubt he will soon be able to ride the "bike" instead of pushing it next time. u This section is being blessed with refreshing showers every day or two, consequently the crops are looking 'fine. Mr T Olin Epps, one of the most progressive young farmers living near Kingstree, is looking after several plots of cotton and corn planted by different farmers under instruction of the United States Department of Agriculture. He has made several consecutive visits to this neighborhood. The plan is deep ploughing in the preparation and very shallow cultivation. Mrs Marion E Scott, who has been * spending a portion of her time with her son, Mr N D Lesesne, at Kingstree, is now with her daughter, Mrs E E McGill, for a short while. Misses Eveline Graham and Effie Brockinton and Mrs V W Graham were visitors in this section last week. * Mr and Mrs W S Grayson of ' Charleston are visiting relatives in this neighborhood. Mr W M McCullough of Nesmith was among the visitors in this community Saturday and Sunday. We notice a great deal of wilt,or, as some people call it, "black-root", in cotton this year. Will some of our FJBC-- ? older farmers tell us the cause and specify a remedy for this trouble?
