Interesting Sidelight Thrown on (
Ware Shoals Incident.
<
Some time ago The State reproduced
from the Columbia eorrespon- '
dent of The News and Courier an (
account of the visit to New York of j
the Governor of South Carolina
which contained the statement that 1
his excellency was gratified at hav .
ing been able to secure in Gotham a
half million dollars for Carolina's
depleted treasury at the rate of
3 per centum per annum. It was
also there stated that this was the
lowest interest rate secured since
Heyward's administration. Simultaneously
The State published a card
from the Treasurer of South Carolina
showing that the loan of a half
million dollars at 3 per cent, interest
was obtained from a Columbia bank
in response to advertised invitations
hiHs- that the notes therefor
were made to said Columbia banker
before the Governor had left on his
New York trip, and also that money
was obtained at the same rate and
from the same Columbia bank in
Governor Ansel's administration.
It was evident from these revelations
that some person was attempting
to put the Governor of South
Carolina in a false position by attri-1
buting to him services of the Commonwealth
which he had not performed,
and an influence in financial
centres where freaks do not command
three cents on the dollar. The State
directed attention to the injustice
done the Governor.
In view of that misrepresentation
of Gubernatorial achievement and
the further fact that the attitude of
^ manufacturers toward their operatives
toward public officials is of
general concern,we print the following
letter to our esteemed Charleston
contemporary regarding another
batch of statements in its Columbia
correspondence:

order to hear the speech by Governor

Then the mill workers pave notice
of their intention to leave the mill
for the day.
"The men are quoted as sayinp:

The mill will have to do without us.'
Gov Blease speaks Thursday at
Ware Shoals. The president of the
Ware Shoals Mfg Co is B D Reipel,

the Governor will speak. A telegram
