work and institute division, has
announced the following interesting
information about institute work. '
Plans have been perfected with the '
leading railroads for the operation i
of the agricultural train that is to be
~ > j i
run over this State Dy ciemsuu <mu i
Winthrop colleges. The train will
consist of one arms palace stock car,
one baggage car,one flat car and two
passenger coaches- In the stock car
will be carried representatives of at
least two dairy breeds of cattle and
two or three of the beef type, together
with the red polled or general purpose
cattle. Four breeds of hogs
will represent the swine industry,
and in addition to the cattle and
hogs th*re will be a pair of draft
mares as samples of what is necessary
to breed good mules. Stops of
from one to three days will be made
in each county. The stock will be
first exhibited on the flat car,
where an expert will go over the
points of each and explain in what
particular each animal excels. After
this work is done the animals will
/ be "detrained," when all who wish
may have an opportunity of inspecting
them at close range. The baggage
car will be used as a laboratory
in giving practical instruction in
various operations of the farm.
Corn judging will be taught in a
practical way along with the prep*
. t aration and application of sprays
for fruit; lessons in soil fertility
will also be given. Among the special
features of note in this car will
be a model farmers' library,containing
just what books a live and progressive
farmer should have in his
' home. Where conditions are favorable,
practical demonstrations will
be given on nearby farms, both in
orchard and field work. The train
will be provided with a number of
the latest and best agricultural im'
plements, especially those suited to
rapid - and economical cultivation.
Where crops and seasons will permit
the workings of both these implements
and the draft mares will be
illustrated in the fields. One passenger
coach will be equipped with
lantern and will be used as a lecture
room, in which will be given lectures
on various subjects of interest |
to the farmers. The other coach '
will be presided over by representatives
of Winthrop College, who will
give practical demonstrations in domestic
science. i
It is planned that this train shall .
start in the lower part of the State,
starting out the early part of June
and spending from one to three days
in a county. No stop of less than 1
a day will be made, as it will take
more than that time to do all the ,
work that is planned. Where more (
than one stop is made in a county, ,
they will be so distributed as to give ;
the greatest number of people an j
opportunity of visiting the train. '
As largely as possible the stope will i
be made by request. The people of 1
each county should immediately get 1
together and agree among them- 1
selves where these stops will be most
most effective and immediately put
their application for in a visit of the ;
train, sending same to the Superintendent
of Extension Work. Clemson
College, S C, who is now at work
making up the itinerary. As little
time as possible should be lost in doing
this,as the itinerary will have to
be completed some time in advance

University of Sooth Carolina.
SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION
The University of South Carolina offers
scholarships in the School of Education
to one young man from each
county. Each scholarship is worth $100
in money and $18 term fee and free tuition.
Examination will be held at the county
seat July 14, 1911. Examination of
students generally for admission to the
University Will beheld at the same time.
