The Southern nightingale, the
mocking-bird, is giving the residents
of Kingstree a veritable feast of
: song from morn till dewy eve. His
{ matutinal lay is a cheerful reveille to
; call tired mortals from slumber to
, the stern duties of life. It is a misI
demeanor to kill or cage a mocking1
bird or rob its nest and the law
I should be vigorously enforced. Not
j only is it our sweetest song-bird, but
I it protects crops and gardens by destroying
insect pests. It is a friend
to all mankind and is deserving of
protection.

after being cleaned, about thirty
to thirty-five pounds. They were
made into a genuine and perfect,
"pine bark stew" by Sheriff Burch,,
who has almost, or even quite, a
national reputation as a master in j
the fine art of cooking this stew.1
The dinner, which consisted of the j
stew,hoe-cake, corn bread and black 1
corree, was served sdoui a o ciock,
and when the statement is made that
it was enjoyed as few, very few, dinners
were ever enjoyed by those
present, this statement tells the
whole storv of how those nen ate
and how they relished what they ate.
They were quiet and orderly,as gentlemen
always are,and reveled in the

the strain of business for one day.;
There was not a man in the crowd
who is not a hard worker, and only
such as these can enjov so well such
a day of rest.
