HAVOC OF THE DROUTH-SCHOOL
CLOSES JUNE 1?BERRY SHIPMENTS
SOCIAL NOTES.
Andre\vs,May 9: ?Our community
is suffering a dreadfully dry and cold
' spell. The oat crop is a total failure
and farmers are having to plow up
_ and njjpJjnt their cotton. Many find
it difficult to get seed for re-plantrv'*
in*.
. .1
' # The pupils ol our mgn scnooi are
preparing for commencement, which
; will take place about the first of
June. All are looking forward to
this occasion with great interest.
We understand that Governor Blease
will be invited to attend these exercises
and will possibly make the commencement
address. We daresay
that our school is unexcelled in the
t State for its progress for the time it
: ' V has been conducted under the pres*
ent system. We have a fine corps of
teachers, and, withal, a superintendent,
Mr H t) Ritter.who is full of energy
and ambition and a capable instructor.
He has gained the love and
confidence of all the patrons and pupils
and is highly esteemed by every
one. This school is one of the corner-stones
of- our town's social fabric
and is, as it should be, the pride
^ ^ of the community.
\ The Land Association of thi||>lace
/ -is now cutting a canal from a point
near Black river through the center
of the town. The size of the canal is
| 7 feet at the top and 4 feet at the
bottom. In some places it is 10 feet
deep. This increased drainage will be
a great boon in the way of promoting
the. health of our town. Besides
this we have numerous other great
ditches all over the town, which
form a very complete drainage system
for the; town and are also quite
beneficie' ^ ) our farming interests.
This -??flesired improvement is
at measure due to the untirof
Col W H Andrews, the
' pntpmrisincr superintendent of the
G & W railroad, in honor of whom
our town is named.
H The strawberry farmers of this
r W place have been shipping three carloads
of berries a week for the past
two weeks. We are informed that
the fruit brings fancy prices, too.
; The truck farms are now employ/
ing about two hdndred hands daily,
A
^ picking and packing the berries for
imarket. This of course puts quite a
lot of money in circulation during
what is normally a very dull season.
The game of ball played here Saturday
between Georgetown and Andrews
was won by Georgetown, the
- " score being 12 to 6.
There was a play given in the
, school auditorium Saturday night
for the benefit of the library. About
two hundred people were present
, and everything passed off nicely,
The play was entitled, "The Old
Maids' Association" Those taking
part were:
Mr H C Ritter, Misses Jessie Dobbins,
Annie Blakeley, Mamie Pipkin;
Nellie Nesmith, Bertie Brockinton,
Novel Richardson and several others.
It was a great success. After
"~TBe performance mere was a general
reception and boxes, ice cream,
candy and flowers were sold. A
beautiful cake was voted to the most
popular girl. Little Miss Emma
Richardson, getting the majority of
the votes, captured the handsome
prize. Subscriber.

OUR COUNTY CONGRATULATED
I
On Her People's Efforts to Kelp
Themselves-State Aid Promised.
We are g!ad to note in the Kingstree
Record the fact that many districts
in that county are beginning
to tax themselves for the improvement
of their schools. We congratulate
Williamsburg. Such bright
and shjning lights as those set on
the hill at Kingstree, Lake City,
Scranton, Rome and other communities
in that section, could not fail
' tn send nenetratine and enlivening
rays of light throughout the com|
munity. The willingness of people
I to tax themselves for education is a
most healthful sign. It is a pity
that we could not have the educational
system of this State so balanced
that the burdens of that taxation
would not be required to fall
most heavily on those least able to
bear them, and to that end the editor
of The Times has been working
long, but Legislatures are hard to
convince, because they are disinclined
to think very hard; to study
very closely problems that do not
confront them more or less forcibly.
Some of these days, if persistent efforts
in the right direction are ever
crowned with success, we will see
that much desired change be brought
about. ? Florence Ti me-".
