Ashton H Williams, of Williamsburg county, representing the Euphradian Literary society, Wednesday evening of last week won the preliminary contest to select the University of South Carolina representative at the South Carolina Intercollegiate Oratorical contest at Greenwood next month. The contest was held in the university chapel before a large audience of students from the colleges of this city. The judges were: Rev, E 0 Watson, F H McMaster and John J McMahan. The orations had previously been passed upon by a committee elsewhere. T M Ross of the Euphradian society presided. The speakers and their speeches are as follows: J 0 Sheppard (Euphradian)? "What it Means to be a South CarI olinian." J D Brandenburg(Clariosophie)? "The Age-old Conflict." * RS Owens (Euphradian)?"Carolina's Problem." C G Wyche (Clariosophic)?"The Rules of the Game." A H Williams, Jr.(Euphradian)? "Practical Citizenship." Hoyt Watson (Clariosophic) ? "The Modern Crusade." The medal given by the two literary societies was awarded by E 0 Watson to Mr Williams, who will represent the university at Greenwood next month. Mr Williams was given a grade of 36 out of a possible 40 on composition and 58 out of a possible 60 on delivery, making a total grade of 94 for his oration.? Ihe State. The Macon Telegraph is responsible for the assertion that when an Atlanta artist wrote to the Governor of South Carolina asking for reliable data about Langdon Cheves? whose portrait the artist wished to paintawith other Speakers of the National House of Representatives ?he received this reply from the Private-Secretary to the Governor: "Governor Blease says he does not know the man you inquire about or where he is now at." The Macon Telegraph.assumes the Governor is joking. It cannot imagine how he could be ignorant of Langdon Cheves. It is the Telegraph that is deficient in understanding. Why should the Governor burden his mind with ancient history? Let the dead past take'care nf its dead. Cominsr down to brass tacks, is it not of vastly more practical value for His Excellency to know Jim Farnum than to know of Langdon Cheves ? Why should he trouble with the shades of those of another generation when the shadow of Tom Felder falls athwart his path like a coming dark event ? Another thing. What sort of name is that, anyway ? Does it not look like "one of them damned foreigners ?" It does, and the Governor is not the man to bother himself with "foreigners;" he doesn't like 'em. Of course there may be an exception here and there; for example, there is a fine fellow in Charleston? His Italian Majesty's Consul Satolli, Prince of Tigerland. No, contemporary, we do not suspect the Governor joking when he reported Langdon Cheves noil est inventus.? The State. Attacks School Principal. A severe attack on school principal, Chas B Allen of Sylvania, Ga, is thus told by him.
