TESTS AGAINST VETO OF FAC^
TORY INSPECTION BILL.
"Whereas, the Governor of this
tate has, by the exercise of his Veto
ower, vetoed the appropriation for
purpose of employing factory Inspectors,
thereby practically nullifying
fKA law and denrivinir the work
?rs of the protection previously afforded
them;
"Therefore, be it resoived, That
this body put itself on record as being
opposed to this policy of the
-Governor and condemning any action
tending to deprive the workers of
their rights and the protection of just
and necesaary laws." x
This resolution, condemning the
action of Governor Blease in vetoing
the appropriation for the factory inspectors,
was adopted by the Columbia
City Federation of Trades and
-will be sent to Governor Blease.
H J Hardy, secretary of the City
Federation of Trades, went to see
Governor Blease several days ago
concerning the factory inspection
law. Governor Blease, according to
Mr Hardy and Senator Weston, got
mad and 6lapped organized labor in
the face. That is the statement
made.
Governor Blease said Thursday
that he knew more about the condition
of the factory people and their
needs than any representative of a
labor organization. Mr Hardy said
that Governor Blease "got hot un
der the collar."
F H Weston, Senator from Richland
county, accompanied Mr Hardy
on his visit to Governor Blease for
the purpose of i troducing him.

J hours of women in stores he is reported
to have stated to Senator
Weston and Mr Hardy that the women
might get out and hunt other
employment.

of Trades, made the fol
owing statement.in which he severely
attacks Governor Blease:
"'On Monday I, in company with
Senator Weston,visited the Governor
to ascertain his reasons for the wiping
out of the factory inspection fea-1
- ure of the law. The Governor stated
hat his reason for so doing was that I
1 ne considered the factory inspectors |
absolutely worthless and a waste of
the State's money. He further
f added that he would attend to that
I feature of the law himself and in his
own way. He further stated that he
would veto any and all labor legislation
that might come before him

"This matter was referred to the
Federation on Wednesday night and
the tesolution was passed and or- j
dered sent to the Governor. To my
mind this action of the Chief Execu- j
tive in assuming the duties of others ^
where the law does not provide for
such assumption,is merely in keeping 1
with his announced policy of interpreting
the statutes to his own liking
