Mr and Mrs A M Gordon are in
Florence, hoping that the change
will improve Mrs Gordon, who has
been sick for quite awhile.
Mr Thos McCutchen left Tuesday
night for the West to purchase another
car-load of horses and mules.

Miss Pollie Vause was taken to
the Florence infirmary this week.
She has never recovered from a
sprained ankle caused by a fall some
months ago.
Mrs Owens and daughter,
of Wisconsin, spent a few days with
their cousin, Mrs LeRoy Lee, recently.
They will spend the month of
March in Charleston.
The ladies of the Presbyterian
church will serve dinner to the public
next Monday, the proceeds to go
to that church. All are invited and
a good dinner is assured.

R J Kirk,Esq, who was summoned
Hagood on Friday by the illness of
his brother, Dr?Kirk, has returned
and reports him somewhat improved,
we are pleased to note.
Hon J E Ellerbe writes us that he
is sending us an additional hundred ,
packages of garden seeds, also a few
packages of lower seeds. They are
free while they last. First come, '

The County Teachers' association
was to have met here Saturday, but I

Miss Serena Lee entertained a
company of her little friends delightfully

Mr G D Smith, representing the
Georgia Marble company, was in
town yesterday and favofed The
Record with a pleasant call. Though
now a resident of the New Zion section
of Clarendon county, Mr Smith
is a native of Williamsburg and a
brother of Mr R B Smith of Kingstree.

Upon taking charge of my work I
have placed an order for another
steel cage for convicts as I have
more prisoners than cage even at
this time and expect several more
next court.
I am now buying four other mules
in order to operate both plows and
use two of the old team to a bridge
gang. I can obtain more work and
can distribute it better by so doing.
I will be glad to have reports concerning
road conditions continually
from any section of our county,most
especially at this time, when guano
hauling is so prevalent, that I may
better facilitate this work.
Please don't plow in the road.

Mother-of-pearl.
In Russia mother-of-pearl is used
for ornamenting church vestments
and in Austria for making beautiful
jewelry; in Italv high relief cameos
are carved on mother-of-pearl shells,
and in Turkey allegorical and ornamental
designs are engraved on
large polished shells which are
known as Jerusalem shells. Natives
of a number of tropical islands
make ornaments of the shells, and
in the south Pacific they use mother-of-pearl
fishhooks, which are so j
bright that no bait or other lure is
necessary, |

of ti & W, attended the meeting.
All ag.hed to do all they could to
get the'road. A delegation of two
men was appointed to see the Road
Engineer and Mr Andrews was represented
by Messrs N W Cook and
Tom Ford, C E. Trio was represented
by Messrs W T Rowell and
J W Register. Mr Eaddy, the
Road Engineer, promised to start to
work on the road as soon as possible.
The projected highway is badly
needed through this section and it
is hoped that the work will soon
begin.
Mr James Bryan was a visitor to <
the county seat Monday.
Messrs J B Files and T G McDon- .
aid were in Kingstree last Wednes- '
day attending to business.
Mr Chas Bryan made a "flying"
trip to Georgetown last Monday.
Mr W T Rowell came home from .
Kingstree last Tuesday night very
sick. Dr Kelley said he was threatened
with pneumonia. Glad to say
that at this writing he is able to be
out.
