GENESEO'S NOVEL HOME TRADE PLAN V : Bringing People to Town Was t the Otiject Sought. . HOW THE METHOD WORKED. Local Interest In Business Stimulated by Monthly Public Auctions?Special Attractions Offered to Farming Folk. ^ k. k. - C u k. I 4 C -.11 lu mcrwuaru ?inan. The life of Getieseo is much like that of other sn.all western New York towns, and it wys decided to see if something could be done to develop more local interest in trade. A num- I frS bet of the merchants of Getieseo de- ! cided to combme and form a business men's association to advertise the j town and help the community, says the New England Homestead. A large number of the uieu decided | that the thing to do was to arrange ^ome method for bringing the people to town. It was decided, therefore, to try holding a free-uuetiou each month. 4 /.am 1-1 oniwl In onvfhin?r ho .ttujr iu. luc. vv...u ... ...... r. f" desired to sell and the business men would advertise it. catalogue it, pay /or an auctioneer to sell it and turn over the proceeds without any expeuse ** to the farmer. At this time the different merchants t J arranged special prices on certuln lines of goods?thus: Seven cakes of aoap for 25 cents or nineteen pounds * of sugar for $1. One enterprising jeweler on the first public auction day ^ sokl 500 solid silver thimbles1 at 17 f -cents each. The public auctions kept the larrn| ore busy?horses, cows, tools and farm products attracted several hundred imen. People who would not come to town for any reason came ou market day, and those who did not come to |> purchase came to discuss things and see what was going on. The first market day was a decided P success. The cost to the merchants was made up by a levy of SI each on " the members of the association. It has since been decided that they will contribute *1 each month and trv the svs tem for a year The second auction B Teas held under unfavorable climatic i' conditions. t>dt was extremely profitBb able to the merchants, and some $3,000 B worth of farm stock wus sold, nearly y*- double that sold at the first auction. B| At the third auction it was decided to add it uew feature. Three weeks before the event uotice was sent to all ^B the county papers that a seed distriH butiou bureau would be established by B the association. A committee outlined B fbwfollowiug plan: All farmers having fann seeds for sale anywhere in the ^brlcfnity were invited to send samples ^R'wfth the amounts they wished to selj B^nnd the price. In the cuse of seed Mjura they could briug ten ears or half peck shelled, half a peck of oats or B -beans and ten iwitatoes: also samples B -of grass, clovers and alfalfa seeds. First, second and third prize cards I were awarded in each class, the JudgB lug being done by Dr. Gilbert of the 5 State College of Agricuittire at Ithaca. Be The fact of placing samples In compeB tition added interest. E Since the auction was not to be until .after dinner the morning was devoted !au institute, ur. uuneri giving an i Idress on the importance of good ed. This allowed time to discuss e samples shown and to give in deil methods for their improvement. le exhibit and address were held in e village hall Ou a bulletin board ?re posted the names of all people iving produce to'sell and of n'\v pern who wanted to buy. ^nd the comittee sought to bring tlie parties tother. In order that the farmers might see aether their soil conditions were nilar a soll map of Livingston counwas hung iu the room, an advance py having just been received from s United States department of agriIture. A Flo wer as Rent. I dispatch frocu Flint. Mich., reports it the local school board has secured ninety-nine year lease of a site for new school building at the rate of e clover blossom a year. The uiau 10 offered to rent the land on these ids is something of a poet, and the ird in accepting the offer has ened into his spirit and determined, it said, to make every year a ceremo>us payment of the rent. It is a pity iuat when sites are given, as they so often are, the generous donors do not exact some such rental as this\ that will requiiv a touch at least of beauf i- I-- ~ MM,., tl^V 1U IliC 91'UWI ill VI. 1 UC ICVJUliVUlVUl of a bunch of roses or of some other chosen flower which must be crown on the premises under the children's care would inject a new, n much needed and delightful element into school life. ? Some Men's Advertising. Once there was a man who adver *tised. He inserted in the local paper a one Inch card, which read: "James Jones, Grocer. I solicit the trade of the Feople. 4011 Dead St." This man nflWL JftU cents for this ad. for one monlh. No one told him that they traded with him because he advertised, and he told the editor his paper was no good as a trade puller and to pay money fo~ advertising was a waste. One year later the sheriff closed him out. and the man has ner^ >r advertised sh oe. Those who would advertise take warning. . A Tip For the Angler. There had been :iit incessant down pout* of rain front the early hours oi the morning. It was now andsti!; the angler sat on the hank of tlie river. Success did n ?t attend his efforts ami his only consolation was a small eel about the size of a worm. Suddenly a drenched urchin made his appenraix e. "Caught much?" asked 1 the boy. ' Can't you see?" impatiently replied the angler. ' "Ver'II catch nothing there, mister." No reply. After a slight pause. "I know where you can catch some, though." "Where?" eagerly inquired the ar dent .-uurler. "Under the bridge." replied the boy. "How do you know?" "'Cause tlie.v alius go there to keep out of the rain." The angler get up to stretch himself, and the youth made a hasty retreat.?
